Where I grew up I remember exactly how much they were....the same amount as my school lunches....$1.25.
I still have my cards and have a few with the price tags on it. |

Hello all...Well that pic is actually mine. ;-) I posted it on the JOE SIGHTINGS forums back in 2006. It's funny how it got around..I recently sold the actual pic to a gentleman writing a book about the 3 3/4" figures, and agreed not to repost it. I know it's already out there in cyber-space, but I thought I'd let everyone know the deal.. It is a GREAT pic, huh? It was taken in the early summer of '84. It was a SERVICE MERCHANDISE store in Owensboro, KY. I worked there over the Christmas season of 1997. That's when I found the picture in a box of old photos taken over the store's history. I got to take the pic after freaking out over it. The store closed down in 1998. Sure held some great toy memories for me! YO JOE!

Thank you for that pic! It brought back great memories of days when GI Joe figures and vehicles took up as much space (or more) than those atrocious WWE/WWF figures do now.

WOW!!! A picture is worth a thousand words, and probably thousands of dollars in MOC and MIB purchases to some of the hardcore Joe collectors out there... Brings back a LOT of memories, though. I grew up in Paradise Valley outside Phoenix and remember riding my bicycle to the local Lionel Playworld and a brand new Toys R Us at least twice a month from May to September, alone at first and then with my younger brother in tow.
We both had to do chores around the house and maintain straight As in school to keep our "allowance" coming every other week, but as soon as we had $10 - $15 dollars saved up, we were off on our bicycles and would come back with the newest figures or in rare cases, a new vehicle. Thanks for bringing back some great memories!!! |

The best part is we rarely walked away empty-handed. As a kid you had many different options if new GI Joe's weren't available: He-man, Thundercats, Silverhawks, T-Formers, Mask, et. al. It was a great time to be a kid in America! |

twice in my life i have found knots of $20 bills. once when i was 10 and once when i was 12.
the first time i bought a ton of joes. the sad part was it was 1992 and they were DEF , Eco warriors, and ninja force. the second time i found the cash, i bought a bunch of cassette singles lol, --classic hits such as whoomp there it is , snoop dogg, hits from the bong, and cash money click lol. I still remember that day, riding bikes with a bunch of my friends and we find this stack of about 500 $. we literally bought 5 backpacks full of shitty tapes and candy. good times

yeah, i remember seeing this pic on joesightings and its history back then. since i started recollecting in 2000, i have had dreams that i walk into a store and see thing such as this. when i saw that picture for the first time i thought it looked like a photo of something i dreamed. just the other day i dreamed i bought a cobra battleship.
back in the day i would always make a point of hangin' in the joe aisle. i didn't what to be caught checking anything else, cuz joe was the cool thing to be looking at. then came transformers. i would dash back and forth between the aisles to look at the new stuff, hoping no one would catch me passing through he-man aisle. i generally got my joes at dept stores and not toy stores. we didn't get an actual toy store until 88', and i left town in 92. my little kansas town got it all except the tru exclusives, which is why i don't own many of them today. i think if had a time machine, i would use it for naughty, naughty things. buying joes would be just a perk. |

Wow, what an absolutely fantastic picture! Over here we never had anything as big as that, we didn't get that many vehicles if I recall, but there was one store that my mum used to take me too, it had a wall full of carded Joes for £1 each (About $2) I was in heaven, I never got that many as I was 7 in '94 when they stopped selling Joes. There was something about that brand new Joe feeling, walking into the store as a kid and looking at all those figures, man I think I'm going to cry!
Oh yeah what do places that sell Joes, aisles look like now?
