I've made several attempts at laying out my own personal Cobra structure, even going so far as to assign specific unit designations and sketch out unit patches. But I've kind of dialed back that level of attentiveness and went with something more broader. Which is kind of how the real world military operates - you go through basic learning all the core soldier skills, then AIT to train in your field of specialty. And depending on what that is, you can get assigned anywhere. I was a 63S-H8 mechanic in the Army and spent time in an Engineer unit, an Aviation Support unit, and an Artillery Support unit. Same goes with, say - a Tele-Viper. He's a commo guy. So he can be in a front line infantry unit of Vipers, attached to a Maggot artillery division, assigned to a Mamba squadron or a headquarters element.
I also have Vipers that get assigned to something not specifically infantry - like a Moray crew. These Vipers would require specialized training (possibly something akin to Marine Raiders) before getting the position as a Naval gunnery crewman. Lots of options. Build it up how you feel it works best.

Baroness arguably a Cobra Officer (RED)
Yeah, Firefly outranks Major Bludd? Flak Viper outrank Snow Serpent? Sure qualified master diver with intense arctic training, but that guy's got a pack that can shoot down planes. Eco Warriors? Toxo-Vipers are supposed to be low on the food chain. Cobra Troopers were considered obsolete/replaced in the 90's. It would be like trying to include Imperial stormtroopers in the First Order. They gone. |

In my head-canon as a kid, Firefly didn't have a rank, sort of like Zartan. They were independent contractors that worked directly for CC, but could be assigned to work with a group and would take orders from the commander, kind of like Dutch temporarily being under Dillon for a specific job.

I see Baroness as the 2nd in command, and others like Bludd, Mindbender, Interrogator, Overlord and a handful of others as generals. Yes, Major Bludd is his name, but in my mind it's more a title (such as "lord" or "count") than the rank equivalent of his position in Cobra. Others like Zartan, Destro and Firefly are hired-on consultants or mercenaries. Wild Weasel and Copperhead would be field commanders.
Again, this is just how I've worked it out in my own world.

A few random thoughts on the 1992 manual.
Mindbender had died in the freighter. Baroness was with Destro at MARS and in his personal army

anyway you slice it, there has to be some kind of organisational structure beyond Cobra Commander gives orders, everyone else obeys. Do I think this means the kinda bureaucratic organisationally heavy crud the US military has? no. But if the Eels are more elite than regular Cobra divers and Snow Serpents and Lampreys are elite Eels SOMEONE has to have been working with those individuals to select them for advanced training. Someone has to have picked the Air-Viper Advanced Class (AVAC) to fly the Firebats from the ranks of regular Air-Vipers. SOMEONE has to have picked out the Officers to become HISS Drivers or Night Attack Jeep drivers. SOMEONE is deciding that this screw-up is going in the Toxo-Vipers or the Desert Scorpions. Sure, Copperhead, Wild Weasel, Destro, Major Bludd (who earned his rank with the Australian Army, lest ye forget) or Baroness could do it. But they can't be everywhere to see everything the same as CC can't.
Without getting into some mad TOE scheme, I would tend to think the rank scheme is something like (bottom to top) Toxo-Vipers Desert Scorpions Blue Shirts/Vipers with a section leader, platoon leader and basic grunts.Flak-Vipers/HEAT-Vipers/Night-Vipers/SAW-Vipers/Frag-Vipers/Motor-Vipers/Tele-Vipers/Techno-Vipers/Air-Vipers and Cobra Divers etc at this level. They remade Mindbender the next year, and I doubt it was because Hama contacting them and asking them to. Indeed, the file card explanation for Mindbender's return and the comic's differ. It surprises me the file card even mentions the freighter at all. TARGAT and Metal-Head were Cobras and no mention of their past affiliations. A Baroness was planned for 1995 in full blown Cobra mode. |

Well, I'm such a dork that I actually have an Excel spreadsheet where I've played around with a working structure to the Cobra ranks.
So, with mine, I have kind of a "High Command" which are some of the individual characters who are assigned equivalent ranks over the entire Cobra Command. The High Command looks like this: Cobra Commander - O-10 Baroness - O-6 Destro O-6 (not necessarily a member of Cobra, but his dealings as the primary weapons supplier gives him commanding rank equal only to Baroness. Not that he commands others in the High Command, but he certainly has the Commander's ear as an advisor) Tomax/Xamot - O-5 Dr. Mindbender - O-5 Major Bludd - O-4 Firefly - O-3 Storm Shadow - O-3 Wild Weasel - O-3 Scrap-Iron - E-9 Copperhead - E-9 (Copperhead doesn't necessarily command a squad of Eels/Lamprey, but has one of the highest ranks among them) My Cobra forces, then, branch into 4 Services: Air Force: Air-Viper, Strato-Viper, & AVAC Army: Viper, Tele-Viper, Motor-Viper, Track-Viper, etc. Navy: Eels, Lamprey, Snow Serpents Elite Troopers: Crimson Guard. The Dreadnoks work as hired mercenaries. My group of 'Noks is very limited. I hated how it kept growing like a subgroup: Zartan - leader (which gives Zartan some commanding power over Cobra "grunts" sort of like a Sgt. Major) Buzzer - second in command of the 'Noks Ripper, Torch, Thrasher, Monkey Wrench, Road Pig, Zarana and Zandar (in my view, these two are 'Noks more by default of being Zartan's younger siblings and do not have any leadership power over other members of the gang.) Take into consideration, my GIJoe interests fall primarily between 1982 to 1987; beyond '87 it's hit or miss on which characters I like. Jason

Neat ideas out there! I like the idea of Roman-style ranks, as it seems to fit CC’s megalomania. In my world though, I don’t necessarily like equating specialties to ranks. It seems likely that most start out as troopers/vipers, but then would specialize and rise through the enlisted ranks there (say e-5 to e-9).
I feel like most Cobra (trooper) officers rise through the ranks, having essentially been battlefield promoted...but they top out around 0-3 ( yup, I know that doesn’t jive with the filecards). Crimson guardsmen are recruited for their existing experience and education, and generally have O4-O6 ranks. The whole “inner circle” is largely a mob without rank, but it’s universally known that if they tell a trooper to fill their coffee, it better get done. This is reinforced by the fact that that CC often puts these guys in charge of large tactical formations, or trusts them with particularly high value missions. I picture CC a lot like L Ron Hubbard in how he might reward and manipulate his inner circle. |
