When I break it down to think about it one letter/word at a time, Larry Hama's meaning of the COBRA acronym makes perfect sense to anyone after they've been put through the Brain Wave Scanner...
Cryptic is the quality of having a meaning that is mysterious or obscure. Order is a society of members who take solemn vows and live according to certain regulations and discipline. Benevolent because they are well meaning. Reptilian means being deeply disliked and despised. Apostates are people that renounce their political beliefs or principles. COBRA is a mysterious, obscure society whose members have vowed upon their lives to a well meant cause, despite the rest of the world not understanding them, and renounce all that they once held loyalty to for the purpose of serving Cobra Commander and his exalted initiative.

Too many people would know who he is and what he looks like.
Billy's last name is "Arboc" according to his action figure. It's probably the same as his father's. It's a safe bet that Kessler is his mother's maiden name. Also: Cobra Commander was called Adam DeCobray in "Renegades." This is the same name the Baroness and her brother used for a time (until DDP revealed it was actually Cisarovna). Different continuities, so do with it what you will... Oh, and the "-La" in Cobra-La means "valley," the same as in Shangri-La. As far as people knowing him, if he had a posse when he returned, he might have just used violence to suppress problems, then gradually shifted people over to his way of thinking by using the kind of populist groupthink that a lot of insane paramilitary factions or putuatively religious cults do, then finally used the brainwave scanner. Obviously none of this is evidence that he actually did return home, but IMO it suggests that he could have made it work if he wanted. |
