I've always wondered this. They're both grunts. They both at the bottom rung. They both do all the heavy lifting? So what's the difference. Is a Cobra Trooper just a Viper in his "dress blues." From the file card it sounds like their both infantry. For a minute I thought Vipers might be Cobra Special Forces, (hint, hint Hasbro.) The file cards relieved that wasn't the case. So I ask what's the difference?
On another note, why is there a desert Crimson Guardsman? I think this was a collect and total waste of figure. Instead of a desert CG why not make an artillery trooper or a tank driver. Better yet a generic Cobra pilot. As far as I know, the only generic pilots are the Mamba pilots and the Strato Vipers. Cobra needs generic pilots. Again on the wasted figure line why is there a Viper in the Arctic Assault line Why was a Viper included? It would've been better to get C.C. or the Baroness in Arctic |

With the FANG/CLAW 2-pack there was a "Cobra Pilot", but he was just a normal officer with purple webgear and a couple helmets. But it WAS a Cobra Pilot, had the stand and everything
But I agree the Desert was kinda a waste.. but you could buy a bunch of those packs and have a good afrika corps

Was the Viper just an upgraded Cobra trooper? You know, maybe the trooper was the original Cobra foot slogger, and once Cobra built up its funds from where ever, they "upgraded" their troops accordingly?

I always thought Vipers were a little more elite and nasty than troopers.
As far as a CG in the desert...Someone has to write the checks and go into town and get all the Troopers out of jail. |

I always thought the vipers were elite Cobra troopers, but only marginally bad shots instead of Ray Charles bad shots.

Read somewhere that the Cobra troopers were the Cobra infantry before Serpentor came on the scene. This could play out in two ways: The troopers became the vipers when Serpentor came to power, or there was a kind of split in Cobra and the troopers are the infantry under Cobra Commander while the vipers are the infantry under Serpentor.
Guessing all throughout. Ideas? |

I consider them one and the same.
The difference in appearance is nothing strange, really. Look at how western troops dress in barracks as opposed to in the battlefield. You could say the Viper Corps replaced the troopers on the front line, as Cobra became more sophisticated. That said, I've always considered Vipers to be troopers in battlefield dress. |

Does anyone know at what point the Vipers replaced the Cobra troopers in the cartoon series? I remember seeing the Vipers get their heads knocked in in the GI Joe movie, but all I remember from the cartoon are the troopers.

It was around the time Serpentor was introduced, I believe. During the Arise Serpentor Arise series.
