I concur that the "sexy" female figures sell well enough at specialty stores, but I don't know if even a well-made female GI Joe figure would sell in significant numbers at mass market outlets.
I think stocking and marketing influences the sales of female Joe figures as well. Many male kids (and kids-at-heart) may not be all that interested in buying female Joes in significant numbers (a vagary of the contemporary action figure market, I think), but I wonder if female kids (and female toy collectors) would be more likely to notice and buy female GI Joe figures if some of the stock were placed side-by-side with traditional "girlie" toys like dolls and dress-up/pretend play sets. I know if I had a daughter, I'd rather she use Scarlett or Lady Jaye or Jinx or the female Doc as role models (you know, females who actually do more than just put on make-up and preen), instead of things like Bratz or Barbies (which, I think, reinforce negative female stereotypes and unhealthy body image concepts among young kids). But you make a good point about the market as a whole. Zefram is very right about female figures as collectibles, but the bulk of the market (and the target of Hasbro's marketing) are moms buying toys for their kids. To sell in the kind of significant numbers we're talking about, those are who you have to go after. Seems simple enough, but I remember being 8 years old and going to buy Teela so He-Man didn't have to run around in his bearskin undies alone, and my Mom trying to talk me out of it. She didn't comprehend the viability of Teela as a character in the world I wanted to play in. See just saw a scaled-down Barbie doll with a staff and a cobra armor suit.

I don't know if it's customizers buying multiples or what, but decent female figures seem to do really well here. Hell, even the goddamn attrocious RoC Scarlet and Cover Girl are outselling their brothers in arms, and Marvel Universe Ms Marvel actually sold faster than her collectible varient! |
