I remember a girl I dated in college who saw my Joes and asked: "Why do you waste your money on that shit for?"

Agreed bro. I guess I got lucky.
My wife is the same age as me and enjoys Star Wars and Superhero films (she's DC; Superman and WW, while I only like Batman/Green Arrow/Aquaman -I'm largely a Marvel guy, Spidey and Mutants. I find DC way to cosmic-y. I prefer Earth bound heroes. Thor might be the only exception as I was a student of mythology). She's also into a lot of true of sci fi shit that I am not into (true Sci Fi not Star Wars sci fi). She is an English Lit major and can give you a run down of English history, line of kings, who's in what line for the crown at any year ect. GoT was big for her (I didn't bother-those aren't fucking dragons, those are wyverns! For me it's Tolkien, Gygax or bust). I was more of a D&D guy. We both had family from England, her father my grandmother, so LotR was prominent in both of our childhoods. I read the unpublished novels that Christopher put out, she never read the Silmarillion. So we have a lot of overlapping with but stray to opposite ends of geekdom. As far as spending money on toys, there were years she didn't work at all and I carried the family. I'd work three months straight through a north east winter to pay the bills, and if I had cash left - buy toys. I run the budget, I pay the bills. I am currently paying my step daughter's first semiester of college. She just started working again to pay the rest of the tuition. When my daughter was young we collected together. it was my in with her. When we retire with my pension and my 401k and live like Billie Ray and Winthorp she knows it will be because I got us there. Shes my co pilot for sure and contributes a lot. She has a Burberry coat, a Michael Kors wallet, and bags from Hermes, Dior, and Louis Vuitton -I have toys and the three bedroom house with a yard and pool in Brooklyn. She really has nothing to complain about. She sees I bust my ass at work and come in whenever they let me work holidays or weekends for overtime. And I keep most of my collection Moc/MiB. She knows if I loose my job I can flip this stuff to pay off what little is left on the house in the matter of a couple months. She knows that bills ad RL come first for me. She's sen me sell off most of my beloved Joe Con box sets to pay bills at hard times. She knows my priorities are right.

My wife and I started dating in 2005, and I was pretty minimal back then. No Joes, just a few framed prints and DVDs, a few statues and a lightsaber. I'd just finished college and had sold most of my collectibles a few years earlier.
Then we got pregnant in 2012 and the collecting / nostalgia bug hit me. Star Wars, Joe and Marvel hit me the hardest, along with the urge to own the games I grew up with, like Street Fighter, Final Fight and Samurai Shodown. Seeing the 25th line in stores really put the idea in my head, along with the Star Wars Vintage Collection. And there were a few Valor vs Venom things I'd seen over the years and wish I'd purchased. So, when my man-cave exploded into a wall of clamshell-encased carded Joes, she was taken aback, but she got used to it. I got most of what I set out to get, so I assured her there's only a handful of figures and vehicles I still need. But, of course, Snake Eyes movie coming out will mean more toys. Good for me, bad for her lol |

I have constant debates in my head about the collecting...Should I? Should I not? Modern Era? Vintage? How many army builders should I get? Should I be a completest? Should I just concentrate on my favorite characters? Should I just sell all of this shit? Now that I've sold it should I buy it back? Now that I bought it all back should I sell it again? And then my wife will ask me, what are you in such deep thought about? Are you thinking about the kids and their future? Are you thinking about which colleges they should consider attending? Are you thinking about their future doctor appointments and dentist appointments? Are you thinking about what we are going to do for our anniversary? Uhhhh...yeah, sure honey. |

Damn right, little twerps eating away at the grubstakes our ulcers have paid for! Truth is, I'm full of shit. My kiddo has a college fund that's big enough right now to fund an Ivy League education, but I keep it on the down-low, so he won't get comfortable and lazy. I tell him he's gotta give it his all and get the best grades he can, not just to help him get into a good school, but also because he's probably gonna need scholarships to pay for it. And then I go on and on about the satisfaction of learning just to learn, and the value of doing your best in everything you do. Anyway, if there's one thing I'm not gonna raise, it's an entitled trust-fund kid. One way or another, he's earning his education.
