Let's say Hasbro decides to go all in on Joe again in 2020 and wants to create a new cartoon. Initial order is 12 episodes and they get Netflix, cartoon network or some other company to go for it.
Who would be your core cast? You can't have 30-40 joes right from the start. Snake Eyes is a must have. Who else would you use for a Joe reboot? |

I was trying to type up a list of pacifists who refuse to carry any weapons, and are concerned about saving the earth from annihilation by catastrophic climate change (formerly known as weather in the Sunbow cartoons), but your list is better. Maybe the only improvement would be adding "unarmed" Lifeline. |

My core Joe team would be:
Duke - Field Commander Flint - Squad Leader Stalker - First Sergeant Gung-Ho - Marine Recon/Grenadier Torpedo - Navy Seal Ripcord - USAF Combat Controller Dial-Tone - Communications Roadblock - Machine Gunner Snake Eyes - Commando Helix - Infiltration And this would be my first team that could later be added to. I would also limit the amount of initial Cobra characters to: Cobra/Cobra Officer - buck soldiers Baroness - Intelligence Cobra Commander - Cobra Leader Tomax & Xamot - Cobra Lieutenants/Financiers Then I'd add Destro later in the first season, but make his affiliation ambiguous. Can't stand gender\Race swaps, but in this age of inclusiveness it is probably a must at this point to touch all the bases. Still I would rather user existing characters. Lots of untapped potential still to be had.
I think it has to start with a new team, but Easter Eggs with some of the old characters throughout the show. A new 13 would probably be the best way to go. I felt like Renegades and Sigma Six were good with the small teams but I feel like a full dozen would be better under a new Joe Commander, like I would say Courage. So Col. Courage -Commander Capt. Claymore -XO Team Field Commander Lt. Barrel-Roll- Deputy Field Commander (PJ) BeachHead - Sgt. Major Senior NCO hard ass Dodger-Driver/Electronics guy (old School Marine) Shooter-Sniper Rampage -team Driver (BeachHead's Ranger buddy and the only one who gets him.) Dart-Team big guy Night-Fox - SEAL Kamakura-Snake-Eyes protege Wreckage- Demolitions Bombstrike-Radio (Barrel-Roll Sister aspect will have a part of the story) Helix-Team Badass They battle Major Bludd and his Skull Squad, another Dozen faceless bad guys. Over time Bludd's crew start developing and getting fleshed out. His Deputy turns into the Headman. Gristle is Headman's brother another Skull sqauder THey leave and SKullbuster becomes the new deputy Asa Negra, Shadow Tracker, Gulliotine Also members who later turn into Ranger-Vipers when we finally meet the commander in Season 2. Other members rounding out the Skull squad: Black Vulture Big Boa Steel Cobra Black Major Copperhead Interrogator Starts with House Destro, Decobray, Iron-Blood and Iron-Claw in Darklonia, Trans-Carpathia mountains, Borovia, Scotland and Kalistan duking it out for power and a secret power source. The Commander and Mindbender turn up later. and take it all. Everyone is stabbing each other in the back.

I’d start with GI Joe “Adventure Team’. Recondo, Scarlett, Outback, Dusty, pick a few more that fit the missions. Hint that Adventure Team is part of a bigger unit that includes the military team. But only hint on that early in the run. They go on non-military, Johnny Quest/Indiana Jones type missions. Later realize that ‘bad guys’ in these missions are part of something bigger as well, Cobra. A ruthless, corporate organization determined to rule the world. Eventually some of Military Joes are introduced to accompany the Adventure team. The second season introduces the full Military/Covert Ops team battling Cobra more traditionally or like Renegades.
Bottom line is de-emphasize the Military aspects at first by going with the Adventure team. The logo should be the classic GI Joe logo overtop of the Adventure Team “A” logo and RoC “Falcon” logo. |

Core Team:
1. Duke - Team Leader, you know him, you love him (or not). The all-around God's gift to selfless service, loyalty, and responsibility. Like Captain America without a costume, shield or superpowers. 2. Cover Girl - XO/Intelligence Officer, a former runway model turned CIA "asset" turned special operative (because she wanted more action). A gifted actress with a knack for social engineering. Very guarded and slow to trust, though Duke might be the one person she has complete faith in. 3. Roadblock - Heavy Machine Gunner/Senior NCO, the heart and soul of the team, combining elements of OG Roadblock with Retaliation Roadblock. Big but thoughtful, and easily able to switch between hardass and more compassionate sides depending on whether any given team member needs a kick in the pants or a understanding ear. 4. Jinx - Ninja, a "graduated" and defected apprentice/cousin of Storm Shadow. Her quirky and "cute" demeanor is very much a false front, and she's got a serious grudge against her former Ninja Master. Occasional flashes of this angry and violent side of her are concerning to her teammates. 5. Airborne (Talltree) - VTOL Pilot and Parachute Infantry, The team's primary pilot. Quiet, determined, and dependable. Has a very deadpan sense of humor. Crushing a little bit on Doc. Best friends with Zap. 6. Doc (Carla) - Field Surgeon and Chemical/Biological Weapons Expert. "Team Mom." The team's health is her first priority, sometimes to the point of being a little bit overzealous with things like meal and exercise plans, or even other "touchy feely" ideas like deep breathing exercises to relieve stress and whatnot. But she can dig a bullet out of a non-anesthetized patient while under fire without so much as an eyeblink. 7. Zap - Anti-Armor and Combat Engineer/EOD Specialist, Rowdy and boisterous (except when it's time to defuse a bomb), and loves to make things go "boom." Roadblock may have the size, but Zap has the typical "big guy" characterization. Major Supporting Characters: 1. General Clayton "Hawk" Abernathy - The trustworthy "higher up" at the Pentagon whom Duke reports to. Tough, fair, and really good at damage control when the Joes show their tendency to always do the morally right but sometimes politically inconvenient thing. 2. Snake-Eyes - A "retired for medical reasons" ex Special-Forces soldier (and Master Ninja). Mostly does his own thing. Very much an ally of the team and all-around badass, but not subject to the normal chain of command. He's Hawk's "ace up his sleeve" when things go really far south. Otherwise spends most of his time at his mountain retreat trying not to think too much about his violent and shadowy past (he did some baaaad things while among the Arashikage, but getting Jinx out of there wasn't one of them). 3. Lonzo "Stalker" Wilkinson - A recently-retired green beret senior NCO who occasionally dips out of retirement to help his old buddies on the Joe team. He is also the go-between for Hawk and Snake-Eyes (who were battle-buddies when they were both younger soldiers). 4. Scarlett - Mysterious and lethally efficient covert operative. Working for a mysterious but apparently benevolent employer (Later to be revealed as Joseph Colton). I would combine elements of Scarlett and Helix into one character. Has a "tense" rivalry with Snake-Eyes over a couple of instances where they've crossed paths and seemed to be at cross-purposes. 5. Colonel Courage - Hawk's straight-laced, no-nonsense Chief of Staff. Constantly on Lt. Falcon's case, but only because he sees his potential and wants to make sure he realizes it. Also a former commander of Duke before he joined the Joes. 6. Lt. Falcon - Hawk's junior aide, eager to see some real action and chafes at his "desk job." Duke's stepbrother. Fresh out of West Point and Special Forces Selection and feels like his best years being wasted. Has a "love at first sight" infatuation with Jinx that isn't entirely unwelcome. 7. Chuckles - A government agent working for an unspecified 3-letter agency that often feeds the team valuable intel and has a tendency to show up in some of the least-likely places. Has a history with Cover Girl that leads the team to not entirely trust him or his "too nice to possibly be sincere" demeanor. Minor Supporting Characters: 4. Joseph Colton - A legendary military officer who now publicly heads up a major rescue and relief NGO (Non-Government Organization ala the Red Cross). Hawk's mentor. Has some agenda that he's pulling the strings on that doesn't become clear until later seasons (and despite appearances to the contrary it's for a good reason). 2. Wild Bill - Airborne's mentor. Hawk's personal helo pilot. 3. Shipwreck - Occasional Ally, Navy SEAL, small watercraft expert. 4. Ace - Occasionally gets called in for Close Air Support. Often found beating Shipwreck, Barrage and Wild Bill at cards (That group reports to Hawk but is deployed as-needed to help the core team). 5. Major Barrage - Artillery Commander. When the Joes need big-gun support, he's who gets the call. 6. Dial-Tone (Jill) - Communications and Cyber Warfare Expert, Works from Hawk's Office. Has a massive crush on Duke that he's either oblivious to or pretending to be oblivious to. COBRAAAAA! The basic idea being that each core team member has a nemesis: Cobra Commander - Duke Baroness - Cover Girl Destro - Roadblock Storm Shadow - Jinx (Storm Shadow believes Snake-Eyes is his rival, Jinx believes she's Storm Shadow's Rival. It's complicated). Wild Weasel - Airborne Dr. Mindbender - Doc Scrap-Iron - Zap Supporting Cobras: Pythona - Cobra Commander reports to this mysterious woman, hinted to be part of something larger and more dangerous than Cobra alone. Tomax/Xamot - the co-head of Cobra's legitimate fronts. And the Crimson Guard. Firefly - An independent contractor occasionally called in for the really tough jobs. Zarana - Cobra's liaison to the traditional criminal underworld. No one knows her true face. Her twin brother Zandar is her chief enforcer, and just as mysterious. Even more so their older brother Zartan, who was once Cobra Commander's personal assassin but has gone into hiding Serpentor - Genetically engineered supersoldier placed in Cobra by Pythona. Skilled, strong, smart, and difficult to control. Major Blood - A mercenary with a reputation for taking the most dirty and messy of jobs without hesitation, as long as he gets paid. Plot Twists: Colton has a whole separate team doing work for him (in addition to Scarlett), revealed in the second/later seasons. Flint, Lady Jaye, Beachhead, Budo, Barrel Roll, Lifeline, and Bombstrike. Cobra is being funded/manipulated by the "Red Shadows", who are the threat that Colton is trying to track down. Aside from Serpentor, the entire Crimson Guard is actually loyal to the Red Shadows rather than Cobra Commander. Eventually the Red Shadows would be defeated, but Cobra would seize the opportunity to fill the power vacuum left behind (and subvert the Crimson Guard to Cobra Commander's side by promoting them to his most elite and prestigious troops where previously they were seen as more of a "reserve" and infiltrators). Zartan doesn't exist/is already dead. His rare appearances are Zandar or Zarana impersonating him as part of a long-term revenge plot against Cobra Commander for getting their brother killed. That got spammier than intended! And maybe sounds more like it should go with a comic series or novel in hindsight...but oh well! |
