I use the Sunbow ranking for the top four of my Joe-Verse:
1. Hawk 2. Duke 3. Flint 4. Beachhead 5. Stalker Hawk is a few years older and the father figure of the team. Duke's personality is similar and he and Hawk tend to agree on most things. Flint is the mediator between Hawk/Duke and Beachhead, who is the most aggressive of the Joe command team. Stalker's personality is based on his Marvel character. |

I always saw it as Duke being the leader up until 86 when Hawk got promoted and took over command...possibly due to Duke turning promotion down to stay on the battlefield.
Up until his 2nd figure & the 2nd series of the cartoon,Hawk barely existed to me. |

Hawk is in overall command and a top-notch battlefield commander (but doesn't usually lead on the field).
Duke is usually the troop commander on the field, but not always. Depending on the mission, Beachhead or Flint might be the field commander.

Duke, to me, is a younger version of Hawk. Both of them earned their respect by leading their troops on the field instead of merely issuing orders.
I never read the comics as a kid so I was a little put off when Hawk started running the show instead of Duke. It wasn't until much much later that I took more of an interest in his character.

As with most, this is an easy answer for me:
My very first Joe (although at the time and until I figured out the Grade levels as a kid I felt I got the shaft compared to my brother and Clutch): Hawk. As someone else said, Hawk commands, Duke leads (although Hawk will occasionally do both). Despite the cartoons constantly putting Duke in charge and making him younger and younger with each incarnation, I always pictured Hawk and Duke actually being about the same age. Blame it on my love of the file cards and comics, but Lt. Abernathy was a green junior officer who went to tell the future Snake-eyes that his family was killed after the latter got back from Vietnam, whereas Duke was doing spec ops stuff at that time with his first stripes and the offer to become an officer that he turned down. To me, they were different in that one was blue collar, the other white, but their similar ages worked well in how they got along. They're also similar in their experience. While their specialties don't immediately jump out as special forces material (Hawk with his Artillery and Radar and Duke with his Infantry and Artillery), both of their files imply a lot more (Duke's being more obvious whereas Hawk's is vague, which probably involves a lot more classified stuff). It's sort of a shame that in the early 80's, Hasbro probably didn't feel comfortable (at least, from a profitability sense) to have an African-American top kick. It would've been great had they followed what Hama was doing more or less with the comics and have Stalker be the field leader instead of having to give us Duke, but I've always liked Duke and in some ways he actually gave more heart to the team than Stalker probably could've in his place. |

Hawk may be incharge of the JOE-team. But Duke, Falcon Flint and Torpedo are the guys who get their hands dirty leading missions in the field!
Even in the Original Comic book Hawk wasn't in the field that much. 1. Hawk lead the first mission to Cobra Island in #1. 2. he was on the mission where Cobra attacked the satelite. but thats all I can think of where he actualy had bullets flying past his pretty little head. |
