It all depends if you regard the Comic as canon or not. I do, but I was curious how many don't, hence the poll. Based on results it's sort of 5 to 1 in favor of the Hamaverse. I need to do a poll on who should be the team XO?

If Flint was an option I would've voted Flint. Flint is my favorite character, followed by Snake Eyes, followed by Lady Jaye, followed by Rock n Roll...Cobra Commander and Scarlett. Roadblock is up there as well. I even have a soft spot for Falcon.
I never really cared for Duke or Hawk. Hawk was way, way better in the Marvel comics, almost Optimus Prime like. Duke was voiced by Michael Bell, and he has such an unforgettable voice. I'm a huge comic fan and grew up a Transformers fan. The comics were incredibly different. Blaster was one of my favorite's in the comics and relegated to a gimmick character in the show. I also loved Prowl, again voiced by Michael Bell, but his impact in the show was nearly non-existent. I think there is just way more room for character development in comic books. Hawk went from just a soldier, to ranking officer, to commander following Flagg's death. Duke just gets inserted into the comic as if we're supposed to care about him (because toys). Hasbro seemed to have a much more thorough and thought out plan by the time Transformers came around: they set the leaders and lieutenants right away. It seems like with GI Joe they sort of let Hama do what he wanted for a bit, and then after the line took off they started mandating things, especially in regards to the cartoon, which shifted casts regularly to keep in line with the figures and vehicles being released. The comic basically had its own storyline going by the time the cartoon came out. Why the cartoon didn't "just follow the comics" - like Transformers which fundamentally has the same arc for the first four-ish episodes as the comic - I think has to do with Hasbro having more direction by the time Transformers came out. I don't know if Hasbro thought this far ahead, but Duke just seems like a cartoon friendly character. He has the bravado and brash attitude that doesn't require much introspection or character development. He's a scene-chewing, wise talking action hero. If someone actually set out to do a slow-burn style show where characters could actually die, and we could see some actual development, then Hawk might have been given his due. That's normally not how cartoons were done back then (except Robotech, which did exactly that) Last edited by FortressMaximus; 08-13-2019 at 07:00 PM.. |

In business terms, Hawk is the President, Duke is the Manager.

Not sure if I answered this over the years or not, but I'm team Hawk. No other option is even worth pondering in my mind.

Always will be a fan of Duke, though Hawk is a better leader. Duke is always bad a$$, even Chuckles in his plan which looked like the Joes die spared Duke, cuz “nobody shoots Duke!” Shoulda told that to the Retaliation guys chuckles...

Duke's by far my favorite Joe, but he's just the field leader for me; Hawk's the ultimate head honcho. Where I diverge from a lot of people though is that I've never liked Hawk calling the shots while actually IN the field. That's always been Duke's territory for me.
