I really like the Resolute trooper- and I agree, it does look like it's sort of a combination of the two- if they ever release more Resolute cartoon maybe there will be a Resolute basic Viper- but I wouldn't be surprised if they just stuck with the trooper- it does look damn good.

I like to think that when Cobra starting making money troopers became Vipers...basically better trained and better equipped fighters. I kinda think thats how all of Cobra worked, the more they made, the more it allowed them to explore different terrain and territories and with that came the need to create and employ various Vipers in the field accordingly.

That's why I like hisstank!
I always considered them two different groups, one (the troopers) more tradicional like the green shirts and the other (the vipers) more modern and specialized.
I don't think it's a good idea to have a Toxo Trooper, a Strato Trooper, a Range Trooper, a Saw Trooper...

@Troynos- that's exactly what I was getting at- the Resolute troops are a great combination of the classic designs- I just thought of something- does anyone know if the ROC Pit Commando's NVGs will fit under the Resolute Trooper's helmet (or over it)- because that would look awesome!

In '86 Hasbro did a concept redesign. I suspect they hired someone new.
Anyway, the Cobra Trooper is the grunt. However, when they did the redesign to allow for all the cool faceplates and whatnot, the new Cobra Viper was introduced to do the same job.
I always like the cobra trooper although I like the Viper too!
I figure as cobra grew and became more advanced, the cobra trooper was supposed to be phased out and the Viper was the new and improved model.
Never was accomplished though! So now we always have this conundrum about which rank is at the bottom of the totum pole!

To me, the Cobra Soldiers are the basic ground pounders. The Vipers are better trained and fewer in numbers. If the soldiers are the Army, then the Vipers are the Marines.
All of the special Vipers (Alley Viper, Range Viper, etc) are the special forces.
To Hasbro, I think the Vipers were supposed to replace the Cobra Soldier. Think about what an army guy looked like in WWII versus today. Very different uniform, and I think that was the kind of thing they were going for. Obviously, I'm not going to get rid of my 30 Cobra Soldiers though, so I had to come up with a reson they would both exsist.
In my displays I always put the Cobra Soldiers with Cobra Commander, and the Vipers with Serpentor, but that's just because of when the figures came out originally.

Vipers are the same thing as Cobra Troopers, just more snazzily dressed and better equipped.
Clearly, the Cobra organization reinvested its ill-gotten gains in their infrastructure.
How else would Destro be able to afford that gold mask, baby?
