When I was a kid I was not a rich one, my mom worked and she was the person who always purchased toys for me (dad thought toys were not important as he never had any when he was a kid), she was on a budget but always made a lot of sacrifices to make me happy and buy what she could in the boundaries of her budget. One day she took me to the toy store and asked me to choose what I wanted, there were a lot of gigantic boxes with wonderful vehicles and playsets (I remember clearly the box of the Cobra Moray but I thought probably mom could not afford that) I chose my figures and now it was the time to choose a vehicle, which one would I choose? All of them were amazing but finally I saw those small boxes with awesome art depicting those battle situations with Joes doing really serious things in the middle of a conflict. I told mom I wanted those small boxes since in my child mind I thought small boxes would be cheaper than larger boxes and so I could have more boxes for less money, mom asked for the price and as she probably could afford four boxes I chose the Machine Gun Defense, Rifle Range, Ammo Dump and Forward Observer units. Those were tons of hours of playing and amusement since the very moment I opened the boxes.
As an adult I recently purchased Weapon Transport and Cobra Adder used but in their boxes and it was a blast from the past: the same small size boxes that probably represented for a poor kid the only way to own something from the G.I. Joe world. Hasbro made something similar to what Kenner did with the mini-rigs for Star Wars, small vehicles for a low price for the kids with low budgets. I have never collected boxes, it is not a field of my interest but since those small boxes were a part of my childhood I am considering starting a collection of mini playsets and mini vehicles boxes and perhaps we can come up with a complete list of all those boxes from the vintage era. Well I only have had in my hands six of them so I will start this list with the ones I know: Machine Gun Defense Unit Rifle Range Unit Forward Observer Unit Ammo Dump Unit Cobra Adder Weapon Transport Any input appreciated. Thanks. |
