No big three for me, just the 83' Joe HQ on Christmas day.

Seems like a lot of guys got the HQ, I never had one until I was an adult. I bet it was fun to play with! Was it fragile back in the day or is that all age related now?

It was pretty solid except for the weapons and such that clipped to the top of the walls. They were a tad narrow at the connection point/clip and would crack after minimal use.

Lots of good posts on here, but especially the point quite a few of us didn't get the big 3 playsets.
I didn't get anything big. I got a lot of 1982, and 1983, and then it was mostly figures and small or occasional vehicles. I literally wasted hours looking at the pack in catalogs dreaming of having an APC, an HQ, a Terrordrome, a Hydrofoil, a Whale, the USS Flagg, and so on. Reading the comics and not having the toys killed me....and yeah, probably why when I decided to start collecting as an adult I went overboard on toys I didn't have. I often think that if my parents had spent a lot more money when I was a child, I wouldn't have spent thousands as an adult....lol My biggest toy I got one year at Christmas was in 1976 when I got the Marx Guns of Navarone set... left by Santa with a letter from Santa saying it was too big to come down the chimney and that's why it was in a garbage bag on my back porch...ha ha.. that playset and styrofoam packing pieces were my forts growing up for m Joes and Cobras. Usually Cobra and being attacked by the Joes, till they all died at the bitter end. |

I never had the Flagg, Defiant, MCC or Terrordrome growing up, but I had most of the other big play sets of the era:
Death Star, Ewok Village, Castle Grayskull, Snake Mountain, 1983 HQ, TTBP, Boulder Hill and some of the big Transformers like Metroplex and Omega Supreme all for Christmas over the years. Looking at toys aisles now for my kids, it's amazing how many great choices we had. |

Little ol me immediately broke a tab off the jail bars. Tried to fix it with superglue and just made a big mess. Pretty fragile, even in 83.

Christmas 1986, i was 5 i received the Terrordrome, Tomahawk, and a Stun. A few years later i got a mobile command center, and the last BIG Joe item i got was a General.
The Terrordrome was one of my absolute favorite toys as a kid. I still have it, and hope to bring it back to its former glory one day.Something about looking at the control panels, refueling station, and the jail cell immediately give me nostalgia. |
