I never had any of the Big 3 either. For Christmas1984 I got the Rattler and WHALE , and I even got up in the middle of the night to open and assemble the Rattler. Caught hell for that let me tell you! Next year I got the Mauler and TTBP, and in 1986 it was the Tomahawk. That was the last big vehicle I got for Christmas.

Lol glad yall laughed at the hampster story. I can laugh now but it sucked back then lol
No other playsets xmas stories but xmas 1987 was at my dads grandparents house. It was first xmas after parents divorce. Rocky year for a 10 year old. But to this day i remember waking up xmas morning to about a dozen new 87 joes unwrapped all moc under tree. He had to work grave yard shift and didnt have time to wrap them but that awesome image of the joes under the tree and the combined knowledge of what he must of been going through on his first xmas post divorce truly makes it a special xmas and gi joe memory for me |

I got the original Joe HQ for Christmas in 1984 from my grandma. Never had the big three but the HQ still holds a major spot in my collection.

The whale was something that eluded me for years as well. In fact none of my friends had it and we all wished we did. I remember us drooling over it in the catalogs whenever we got a new vehicle. If I remember right I think it was one of very few vehicles featured in the Sunbow cartoon that none of us had. I remember my buddy Chris had a Moray that I wanted so bad but he wouldn't trade it to me out of fear his mom would beat him lol. He did trade me his 84 Storm Shadow though for something stupid like some TMNT or food fighter figures or some other crappy figures I didn't like because it was like the score of the year for me.

Man I was so envious of my friends back then. We grew up super poor and I was lucky to get a single figure during those days. But it makes me appreciate what I have now a lot more. I often wonder what happened to my neighborhood friends, did they age out and stop... or are they adult collectors now? I'd try to find them, but their names have been long forgotten hahaha.

I actually scored a Storm Shadow somehow and it was my pride and joy, but I was playing with it around the BBQ while my dad was grilling burgers (pretending it was a volcano or some shit) and dropped ol' Stormy right into the fire. I never found another one... *sniff* Quote:
He also got Zartan and the Swamp skier that year, as well as Firefly...

Does Fort America count??? Lol I asked just about every year for one of the big 3 to no avail. By the time I was old enough to make a Christmas list I just don't think my parents were going to spend the kind of money on one single toy because they had 3 of us to buy for. My older bro on the other hand got things like Castle Greyskull, Snake mountain, Boulder hill and a bunch of others that got handed down to me. I did get some amazing stuff like the Tomahawk which will always be one of my all time favorite toys. Each year I would get a bunch of figures and two or 3 vehicles along with TF MOTU and TMNT.
I do remember a few of my friends got some of the bigger playsets like the MCC, 92 HQ which was great because just about every kid in our neighborhood was into Gijoes and we would have epic battles in the back yard. |
