Seems like an easy win for Hasbro and Paramount.
Smaller figures and smaller scale vehicles, gimmicks galore obviously. Two brands that might not be strong enough to stand on their own (unfortunately) - however when combined you can have some really awesome possible scenarios/toys/movies... Example: GI Joe creates the M.A.S.K operations to battle the Transformers. Done! Easy money and makes every brand involved relevant. |

TBH I don't think a 2in line would succeed regardless of the names tied to it. Didn't Hasbro try it and fail with Marvel? I seem to remember that stuff peg warming forever. Now a 4in line I think most of us could get behind. Sceptical that this will happen at this point.
I honestly think the main problem with GI Joe failing to be successful is Hasbro. It seems Hasbro is going through it's own identity crisis that it can't come to terms with and has no time nor intent to focus on brands that don't sell themselves. IMO Hasbro is one wrong decision from utter failure and ultimately either being sold off or going under completely. With MLP the Transformers and it's licensing agreement with Disney the only thing keeping them afloat it makes me wonder where they will be if and when Disney decides to leverage them on the SW and Marvel properties, again this is all speculation and or my opinion but Hasbro is walking a fine line with their desire to be more than just a toy company. Add the terrible deal with Paramount (Viacom) a direct competitor of Disney and we have a recipe for disaster. If I remember correctly Disney pretty much ended the Paramount Marvel relationship just so they could move everything under their own umbrella.

First off, I don't think the 2 inch line will go anywhere, I certainly have no interest in it.
Also, GI Joe is in a hard spot. I am watching the original series, I realize that because of my rural hometown, I only ever managed to watch the two mini series/movies. GI Joe could go sort of "camp" and cartoony like the series, or they can go a little more realistic like Retaliation, but given the modern sensibilities of people, I think the more realistic portrayal means half the country will never buy these toys for their kids. even if they water it down, i am not sure half the country will by "war toys" or "violent" toys like GI Joe. I mean, in an episode I just watched, Blow Torch went to town with his flamethrower, not sure that sort of thing would sit well with many today. |

I get where your going.
But I think that Sigma 6 attempted a similar idea...it didn't work. Frankly its not a bad idea, but I think long time collectors simply have been and will be staying with the 3.75 4 inch scale. |

Children don't play with toys as much as they used to, and stop at a younger age. They switch to video games. Sometimes they will play with toys based on these video games. But Hasbro didn't get on board the video game bandwagon because their executives are frankly a bit out of touch and don't get it. They consider video games a competitor and not an opportunity. Video games are for this generation of kids what cartoons were for us kids in the 1980s - they're the dominant cultural outlet for kids. Ignoring video games now is like if Hasbro hadn't made a cartoon in the 1980s and expected the figures to sell. So for the 25th anniversary Hasbro wanted to relaunch the brand and the strategy was to sell new versions of old characters to adult fans who are nostalgic. And it worked for a while when they were selling the popular characters but then after those characters came out interest ran aground. Then Hasbro based their strategy on tying into movies and the results were not great but sustained the brand until the second movie's retail release burned retailers and they don't want to stock GI Joe anymore. The biggest retail ally of GI Joe(Toys R Us) went out of business. So Hasbro is letting it rest until the Snake Eyes movies comes out and they're going to try the exact same strategy a third time but with less retail support and confidence than they did for the first film. Albert Einstein supposedly said the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. So I'm not holding my breath on this latest iteration of the same strategy suddenly working. What Hasbro is going to do for the Snake Eyes movie is this: they're going to put out a 1:18 movie line and a couple of vehicles, and probably a line of 1:12 figures based on the movie and RAH aimed at adult fans. There'll also be junky over size figures, junky little tchotchke figures, bare minimum quality licensed junk. If there's a video game it'll be some afterthought app-based game or console game licensed out to a bored minor studio. The 1:18 line will likely be disappointing because Hasbro has fired the people who worked there who cared about the license. It might be okay because there are still some quality designers but don't get your hopes up. The 1:12 will probably be modestly successful as Marvel Legends fans buy the core characters. Then after wave 8 or so it'll peter out as they get into the less popular characters. The real strategy at Hasbro HQ is likely to try and avoid bankruptcy until Disney or Netflix or some other company with bright-eyed execs acquire Hasbro and revamp the line themselves(probably in a way that will piss off the RAH fanbase ala Star Wars). What a pathetic waste. The 80s Joe comic was a top-seller at Marvel the same time as most of the Marvel Universe comics that the MCU is based on. It was worked on by the same people in many instances. Why are Marvel successful and Joe not, as movies? Because Hasbro and Paramount don't understand the brand. Every single movie Marvel puts out they ask a question: why did this character work in the first place? They figure it out, distill it, update the rest. And the movies WORK. And Disney are masters of working all the angles. There's Marvel stuff available for every age of consumer. There are not just toys, but video games, cartoons, video games BASED on the toys, toys based on the cartoons. They cultivate a fanbase. Something Hasbro hasn't even tried to do since the 1980s. tl;dr : - Hasbro is lame and has no idea what they're doing - They're just going to limp along until they're put out of their misery - Don't expect a miraculous revival of the brand Last edited by bluesparrow; 12-10-2018 at 12:58 AM.. |

The closest Hasbro has gone with this idea is Matt Trakker being in the 25th Anniversary line. You have a good idea, but I agree that the 2" line would probably end up a flop.

Anyway, Joe will revive when they make a GOOD movie that catches fire with audiences, or a top-tier video game (eg Call of Duty). Until one of those things happens, GI Joe will get table scraps. Does anyone know why the **** Hasbro keeps working with Paramount? |

[QUOTE=Jinx723;5173490][size=3]I still hate Hasbro with a passion for teasing us with Matt Trakker.
It’s been ten years, they could’ve at less given us a Miles Mayhem by now. Well they might now that the club has made the molds that would make an awesome looking....oh, wait. We are talking about hasbro, nevermind.
