"He might be Larry to you son, but when you have known him as long as I have, he is Lawrence."
umm, yeah, actually I did it. Who knew if you put a bottle rocket upside down, it would blow up and start a grass fire? |

That's cool, I didn't remember him being named as a ninja until after #21, but I haven't ready the pre-21 issues in decades. Silent Interlude was where I really got into it, so when I started re-collecting a few years ago, that was where I started. And even though his ninja-ness is usually associated with his visor outfit, his best stuff in the comics was before that.
Just had a huge nostalgia moment, I remember looking on a cardback from the 85 line and seeing a new Snake Eyes figure with visor and sword, and was blown away. I remember him being a bit hard to find, I was on vacation from San Antonio in Dallas at my aunt's house and we came across him. Of course, being awesome, I got him. Ah, those pre-internet days. You had no idea what was coming down the pipeline until they either hit stores, TV commercials, or a Christmas Wishbook. |

Issue 10 is big for so many reasons--- Dr. Venom & the Brainwave Scanner, thefirst glimpse into Snake-Eyes' history, and the whole Springfield concept. The series doesn't work without it.
Regarding the ninja thing being incorporated into Snake-Eyes' character: Hama worked on Iron Fist's early 1970's appearances ("Marvel Premiere", I think) and some of the ninja stuff, martial arts stuff and mysticism was present, there. So like most comic writers, he probably explored some of these ideas back then and expanded upon them in his later (GI Joe) writings. I think Hama was primarily the artist on those early Marvel Premiere appearances of Iron Fist; but he did have some input into the characters and plot. Snake-Eyes' 1982 file card says he's proficient in "Kung fu, Karate and Jujitsu" along with "some form of holistic medicine". Those attributes could be applied to a description of Iron Fist. Now, I'm not saying "Snake-Eyes is Iron Fist". Far from it. They're completely different characters. What I am saying is that Hama worked on both characters, so there may have been some carry-over.

We did a thread a while back catalogging the influences of G.I. Joe. Nobody mentioned Iron Fist then but that's a good suggestion. We found material from Hama showing he based Snake-Eyes on an Indian character from a specific Western TV show.
To the OP, when I read comics in the 1980s, the cover dates were 2 months ahead of the current date, not 3. |

I recall a reference way back in issue number 3 (the cobra robot one) I believe that mentions Snake Eyes using fist daggers on some cobra troopers. Sounds pretty ninja-like to me.
