A guy with an Italian sounding codename, an Irish sounding surname, apparently a Scotsman and heard of a Highland clan, an American accent in the cartoon, a Russian in the Battle Action Force continuity, played by an Englishman in the live action movie...

I figured Destro was untouchable in the UK because MARS had too many MoD contracts and employed too many people.

I have a hard time figuring out just how secret his involvement with Cobra/other shady shit is supposed to be.... His code name is Destro, he lives in castle Destro in Scotland, and is part of the Clan Destro and also is the CEO of a defense contractor.... but nobody knows how to get to him? Except the time the Joes go to the UK and just jump into a Landie with a couple of SAS guys and drive to his house.
In my head “Destro” is simply the nom de guerre of James McCullen, a secret name passed down with the mask. He’d have to live in Castle McCullen and avoid wearing the mask in public or else MI-5 would be at his door in short order. In my mind, McCullen sells to the "good guys" and Destro sells to the "bad guys" thus fueling both sides of the war. Also, I could see a sort of "love triangle" between McCullen - Baroness - and Destro because Baroness doesn't know that Destro IS McCullen. By the way, concerning Destro's voice in the cartoon, I've read somewhere that Hama stated that neither Cobra Commander nor Destro were rendered in the cartoon the way he perceived them in the comics - including their voices. Originally per the filecard his birthplace was unknown, if he had a Scottish accent I think they would've guessed it. So I don't think Hama had Destro's origin down early on either. Never made sense there as even in the Marvel comics Sunbow made commercials Destro was never given a Scottish accent but Zartan however did have an accent :
I don't think Destro would've used his real voice as Destro, but Cobra Commander and Destro did seem like master of disguises, GI JOE seemed to have had quite few that were. Baroness was though specifically signaled out as being European on her file card(and she was given a heavy eastern European accent in the cartoon but I don't think the comic had her with accent but a french sounding fake Cobra inspired name like DeCobray). Destro was also described as "faceless power behind Mars which was the largest manufacturer of state-of-art weaponry". So we don't get really the impression he was known to be in charge of that corporation or whatever it was supposed to be but it seemed important. The whole helmet fixation from Sunbow to Action Force and later DDP on his helmet in particular I think was corny and cliche and its ultimate bi-product was ROC . Shame Destro's ruby medallion was forgotten about, to me it seemed more important than the helmet. Which almost every Cobra wore some kinda complete helmet or mask mostly cause they lead double lives and were international terrorists. |

Not to derail the conversation, but in that Issue 1 commercial, did you ever notice transport tube in the Pit?
I've been researching the comic commercials recently as, to me, they almost have their own GIJoe "universe" to them - somewhere between the comics and cartoon. Jason |

Yeah, I think one of those Flashes is suppose to be Grand Slam. You can see Breaker on the HAL later on. Also, in other commercials (Issue #5) there is a Cobra hovercraft, and then like Issue 18 or 19 there is a Cobra with an M60 and a couple of Cobras on a HAL. I think in the MASS Device there were some Cobra FLAK cannons also.
