This is just a hypothetical thought that I was playing around with, and it's a question that I'm also interested in knowing the possibility of. And maybe it will spark an interesting conversation amongst us. If Hasbro were to approach MTF with the GI Joe property, and gave it the green light to reconstruct all the characters in the GI Joe line , from beginning to end, throughout the ARAH years, would that be an impossible task to take on? Would that even be worth it, to take on that responsibility and project, in hopes to profit off of it? Would the prices be the same as the regular MTF figures that are being sold? Would their even be enough demand to warrant such an idea? Now I'm not suggesting a retail release, but an online ordering process like how BFS and MTF conducts it now.

I think the modular nature of MTF would make this impossible to sustain. MTF is built on basic molds used over and again. While there would be room for reuse just as hasbro as done, the amount of new sculpting necessary would make this unsustainable i would think.

I think that , while it is an amazing idea , and John and his crew would make a far better job than the current/outgoing mob , it is a very big risk for an independent and probably would not happen without some input and support from Hasblow.if they were interested , a better option would be Boss Fight , who were behind some of the best joe designs and sculpts , or even a joint project between Marauder and Boss Fight Studios with some support from Hasblow.this way some sculpts/parts could be reused in their own lines . the FSS could be revived and done properly and a classics/vintage line created to remake the vintage figures properly using the more current molds/new parts , imagine a duke v1 using the 50th flint torso/body , roadblock in v1 colours using last years tiger force version , a new lt. falcon etc , plus with the creative talent of both companies we could see new characters introduced , maybe even a complete new roster of joes/cobra . I would like to see the Action force/ Red Shadows explored more in ME format.

A fully loaded trooper and complete bfs figure cost about 25 each. BFS licensed figures cost 35. You ready to pay in that range for Joes?
Nevermind that we're paying about 45 for club joes which are made from preexisting tools.

We already were with FunPub. And plus, seeing how non-subscribers were willing to pay $60+ for a lot of those Club figures, I don't see that being an issue. Now don't get me wrong, and I'll edit the beginning post, I'm not referring to a retail release. This will be more of an online Club ordering just like how BFS and MTF are doing it now.

Marauder would have to learn how to do a lot of new molds. His figures are engineered a lot better than many Joes, but they use only a few different body types.
I would love for this to happen, but I feel like the process of getting new figures would be even slower than Super7's MOTUC efforts, which I don't really think can sustain a new line.

What would be cool and maybe more realistic, if they did kits designed to be Joe characters without explicitly calling them such. Others have suggested as much. I think that should be successful.

Apples and oranges. The business model is completely different. And this is based on some interactions I had with Catrina. Guys like Marauder and BFS make toys specifically designed for adult collectors. They expect low production runs for a niche audience, and this is built into their design, pricing, etc. etc. They aren't trying to duplicate Hasbro's business model (ie moderate pricing, large production runs, wide retail audience) and they couldn't do it even if they wanted to.
So what if someone waved a magic wand and Hasbro decided to let Marauder (or whomever) produce Joe characters? I have to agree with the previous responses in that it would basically resemble what the club already did: A small number of high-priced collector's toys that relied heavily on re-used tooling. The bottom line is that this is the same problem we run into every time we have this kind of discussion: The economy of scale doesn't support it. Now, if Hasbro were to offer a store that let you mix-and-match individual Joe parts (arms, legs, heads, etc) based on the ME tooling they have already produced... That would be something special. |

I don't think MJ or Rueben would accept the offer. Let's be honest, Marauder IS making G.I. Joe figures - or more correctly, they sell a product that allows the customers to make newer, better G.I. Joe figures.
Hasbro has already utilized sort of a "module" design themselves, with the fact that they re-use certain body designs and then add a new web gear design. Jason |
