Most of the junk--errr, ITEMS--- I sell on eBay are in fairly low demand, so I haven't run into any scammers in my 11 years of selling.
Only two instances I can recall: a guy bought a variant from me and complained in a very nasty message that it had been damaged. He was a complete assclown in his message and threatened me with: "I will give you BAD FEEDBACK!" The entire transaction was only 5.99 with "Free Shipping", so I was only netting maybe 2 bucks in profit. I asked for pictures of the damage-- which he sent from his flip-phone--- and I refunded him a portion of the transaction. Maybe even the whole thing. I don't remember exactly. Never heard from him, again, and I never received that BAD FEEDBACK. I also sold a lot of 4 Harvey Comics (Casper, Richie Rich) to a guy who never paid. After a few weeks and opening a case with eBay, he finally responded with: "no contact from seller. Bought other comics". Complete BS, because all of my messages and requests for payment had been logged through eBay. I think, in that case, it was the buyer having second thoughts about what he had purchased (I mean: Richie Rich?!). Turns out, the guy was a local whippersnapper who wrote a monthly video game column for the local newspaper-- which stunk. Circa 2001, I feel victim to a VERY curious scam for an old, random, issue of "World's Finest". It was somewhat early in eBay's days, so it wasn't unusual to send a check in the mail, to the seller. Never received the item; and never had an identity theft or check fraud issue. I didn't look at the seller's profile before bidding--- and if I had, I would've never entered a bid. "She" had all kinds of nasty feedback wars going on, and "her" profile page had a cheesecake shot of "her" in a Girl Scout uniform.

So now eBay is automatically making some of your listings to accept offers. You have to go back in and edit them to revert them back.
This is unacceptable. I have a figure priced competitively and they set the offer at almost half!

Yes it's been doing that for a little while now. It seems to only be happening when you list/relist from the cell phone app.

I hate to say it but part of our problem is the Joe collecting community. When I sold off my SW collection ranging from the 70s to EP1, I could literally start every auction T .99 cents and know I was going to do okay. Joe stuff I have to list as a BIN though. It I run it as an auction, I assume I will only get one or two bidders.
I am slowly clearing out my large collection using BIN auctions. I compare prices to recently sold items and start there. Then I set best offers and let it go until sold.

The bad thing is... I don't want to be "that guy" that doesn't accept offers, but their tiered pricing is skewed!
I average sold listings to come up with my price... but they automatically reduced it to half that.

I honestly can't get a handle on why some auctions sell for nothing and others catch fire. I've seen the same item sell for widely different prices for no real discernible reason. And that includes Joe items.
I do know one thing for certain though, if I bid on an item, it'll suddenly become the most sought after item ever. I think part of the reason for the discrepancies in selling prices comes down to laziness on the buyers part. I think some buyers just want to log in and do a quick search for something and buy it, and not invest the time it takes to find a truly good deal. Another weird thing is when items consistently sell at a higher price on ebay than on Walmart.com or target.com. |

I've had stuff not sell for the longest time and I just relist it and suddenly, there's like 4 people bidding on it. It's all timing and how many people at a particular time happens to come across your auction.

Yeah, ebay's a weird place. I often wonder why people will pay more there than at Walmart, etc too. I guess it's heat-of-the-moment bidding (some people really get territorial and aggressive when bidding, like it's a game or something) and people just not even thinking to shop around.
I've also noticed items will go unnoticed and then suddenly get hot for no reason other than no one was looking for it and now they are. The Narnia Castle is a good example of that. There's one guy selling a ton of them. A few weeks ago, no one seemed to care, but now the bidding has gotten busy. Anyway, this all makes me think the best thing to do as a seller is set your starting price or BIN at what you want for it and then prepare yourself to wait it out. |
