I had one guy bid up something that was really hot at the time. There were multiple bidders. There was one guy who really wanted it I guess and bid a high amount.
Then some other d-bag goes and bids. He bid it up to like $200 and then left it there so everyone can see that the high bidder bid at least $200. Then the day before, basically at the last second he can cancel his bid before it has to be done by me, he cancels his bid and the price drops down to $75. Of course, everyone watching the auction can see that the high bidder had bid at least $200 so I didn't get anymore bids. The worse part is, the high bidder never paid and dragged it along until the item wasn't hot anymore. In the end, I ended up selling it for like $65 or so only.

I don't get too many non-paying winners. I get some that take a long time to pay but almost every time, they contact me before the end of auction to ask if they can take longer to pay and every time, they do pay.
I've had a few that just didn't pay at all and I had to file a claim to get my fees back. The other ones, they win and say they made a mistake or that their kid got into their account and bid, which honestly, I think it's BS. One even checked out and paid and claimed it happened while the phone was in their pocket and they didn't know they 'butt purchased'. I've also had to ask for two cancellations after buying-it-now and both times it was because I was buying something for someone else and I'm a dumbass and bought the wrong thing. Sellers are usually cool with that. Two other cancellations/refund requests were because the items were gifts, but the sellers sat on shipping the item for days and they wouldn't have arrived in time for the birthday. Don't say you'll ship the item in 1-2 days if what you're really gonna do is provide a tracking number in 1-2 days and then wait a week before actually mailing the item. |

interesting info. just struck me funny as it happened to me all at once. it is what it is I guess. I have friends who own lcs's, a friend who travels selling things at cons, local buddies who sell at local con's and they all sell on ebay and are having more horror stories then happy endings in the last year it seems. I guess its the keyboard warrior mentality. people thing they can do whatever they want because "it's just the internet". if you bid you should be locked into it each bid, you back out then that's fraud or something like that.
I don't sell on ebay, honestly don't know how, mostly because of all the nightmares I've read and heard about doing it. I do sell at con's or to friends I know I can trust to send me the money. whats nice about that is its like the buy it now option on ebay. I instantly have my money. on ebay I search the buy it now's first usually. if I find something that I think is a fair price I buy it so I don't have to dick around with a 6 day auction that has no action until the last 5 minutes. I've even bought somethings at full asking price that have a obo on it. if its a fair price and I got the cash why not buy it instead of kicking the guy for some cash off. the obo's I hate is the people who will only accept 50 cents off, especially on an expensive item. if your selling something for 30 bux but only willing to come down 5o cents, just list it 50 cents cheaper. is the 50 cents really going to make or break you. |

eBay strongly pressures you to allow best offers on your listings. In fact, it will sometimes charge you 35 cents (or whatever the listing fee is) if you don't. You can almost always list for free if you allow them. So many sellers (and I'm guilty of this too) include best offers without the intention of accepting any real reduction (I already price my items below the lowest Buy It Now price). I hate best offers because they convert a Buy It Now listing into basically an auction listing once the buyer or seller accepts the offer -- meaning the buyer no longer has to pay instantly. They can drag it out for six days, which is ridiculous.

They not only strongly pressure you, they make it a default on their mobile app.
It's fucking annoying. I was selling something last night at $250 dollars and their "suggested offer" was set to $125! Fuck that, fuck them. I got a ton of offers before I was able to edit my listing, and I'm sure it pissed a few people off. The app is a joke, you have to tool into fields to remove their defaults.

And while we're on the subject, I HATE when people message me asking if the item is a knock-off, and when I reply "No", want me to sell them the item at knock-off pricing. Had one guy harass me aggressively like that when I sold a couple of import items (Revoltech Carnage and SH Figuarts Cammy). Kept wanting me to sell him the items way below my BIN, which was what I paid for the figures, and would get increasingly nasty when I refused. Checked his profile, and discovered he was an import toy reseller. Banned him immediately. Also had my first encounters with people who take their sweet time paying for auctions, if they pay at all. And as described earlier in this thread, they deliberately outbid others before pulling that garbage. This isn't a side business for me - I'm selling stuff I no longer want to buy new stuff. If I get this nonsense, I feel sorry for those of you who actually need to make a profit from this, because it screws you over big time. Last edited by Necryan; 10-11-2018 at 12:13 PM.. |
