For my auction, what I see happen is the one bidder bids multiple times for the same item. Not sure if the whole idea is to scare off other bidders by telling them if they want it, they'll have to bid more than the opening bid.
I also get a lot that win and almost immediately ask me to cancel. It's annoying. Quote:
One thing that I've noticed a lot is an item sitting with no bids for a long time, then suddenly getting bids the last day (not unusual), and then that item is relisted very soon afterwards.
Obviously many things can be happening here (I don't sell things via auction because of the number of nonpayments), but I strongly suspect that someone is driving up the price with no intention to pay and then the seller tries again. I have a number of searches where this happens repeatedly (try following Sideshow Scarlett Witch for example). Sound. How is that working for you? I like the idea of letting the market decide what something sells for, but I don't think it works that way anymore. Too many shill bidders, assholes and buyer's remorse types. |

Oh, another scam is "SpeedPAK." I've recently bought a few Transformers from Chinese sellers who use this. I dunno what the deal is, but it adds so much time to shipping, it's ridiculous. There's no "speed" in "SpeedPAK." That's just duplicitous. It's bad enough that I'll no longer buy an item if they use it for shipping.

It's not bad. I personally do not like bidding, I'd rather buy it now and be done with it. So there's a large market of buyers that feel the same. Most of the time I bid on something, I'm outbid... so it's a waste of time.
I do a ton of research on current market value, using sold and completed auctions as a reference. I price my stuff reasonably well even lower than past sales.

I've sold about $2k worth of MOTUC and other misc. stuff over the last three months (mostly to pay for GI Joe and clear out space) and I've used only Buy It Now.
I hate participating in auctions and I hate selling in auctions because the buyer effectively has SIX days to pay after winning (and many do not even with that amount of time). With Buy It Now, you're paid instantly (unless you goof around with best offers). I also generally only search for Buy It Now listings as a buyer. I highly recommend trying it.

Something I learned fairly quickly with eBay bidding is to Watch the item and never bid on it until there's a very short time left on the clock. That will ensure even shill bidders have very little ability to respond and ramp up the price. You're basically being an easy target by showing interest with bids placed days before the auction ends.

I only do auctions when I am unsure of the price but know i have an item that will garner a lot of attention and a good price.

I just block them from my auctions and report them to Ebay. Not much else I can do. For things that are hot and I know will sell, I usually do auction. For slow moving stuff, I'll do Buy It Now and allow for offers.

Yeah, I've noticed all sorts of weirdness/sketchiness on ebay lately. I swear there are also what I like to think of as "asshole bidders" who tend to pop up on auctions for related items but from different sellers and seemingly bid just to drive up the price. It's like they're seeking out early bidders and trying to get them into a bidding war. It seems to happen too frequently to be a coincidence. Maybe it's shill bidding, but as I said, I've noticed it happen on auctions from multiple sellers. Could be just people with poor impulse control, but they rarely, if ever, win these auctions. It's like they feel out the early bidder and bid just enough to goad them into another bid, and then another. They never really swing for the fence and try to win. It all feels so counter-intuitive to how an actually interested bidder would bid. I dunno.
As for selling, I always try to do a mix of auctions and buy-it-now. I reach more customers that way. Very, very rarely do I have an issue with a non-paying auction winner. |

I don't get too many non-paying winners. I get some that take a long time to pay but almost every time, they contact me before the end of auction to ask if they can take longer to pay and every time, they do pay.
I've had a few that just didn't pay at all and I had to file a claim to get my fees back. The other ones, they win and say they made a mistake or that their kid got into their account and bid, which honestly, I think it's BS. One even checked out and paid and claimed it happened while the phone was in their pocket and they didn't know they 'butt purchased'.

So, um, confession time. I browse through, probably 75-95% of ALL GI Joe auctions each week. If I see a good item, with less than 24 hours remaining, and the top bid is only at 40-60% of what I believe the item is worth, I'm definitely gonna throw some bids out there. Why? Because it's too good of a deal to pass up. Should I win, I always pay. Most of the time, a flood of bidders hop in at the last minute, and my "test-the-waters" bid doesn't even matter. Sometimes though, I just end up bidding up the original bidder (sorry boys). However, occasionally I'll get an amazing deal this way.
