I am running out of room and I am looking for some storage ideas...
I live in a flat with huge balcony, so I am planning to buy a small wooden storage/room (10 feet * 10 feet), and store in it my whole collection. Only loose stuff, no custom painted stuff. My question is... Will the weather (humidity, heat) damage the figs and veghicles and affect the plastic longterm? Thanks in advance! |

I see you live in Greece. In that magnificent country I think that humidity is not a problem but the heat could be. Direct sunlight, humidity and the heat are deadly for plastics. I suggest you find a place inside your home and away from these three atmospheric agents.

Over the years I have read some really interesting in-depth science from people who really understand plastics on this site. I don’t know anything about plastics myself but here is what I do for my own collection.
Keep them out of light. Natural sun light is bad. Artificial light can do some damage over time too but it’s not as bad as that UV light. Keep them out of extreme temperatures and moisture. Also quick and drastic changes in temperature, like what you get near your mechanicals in your basement. I keep my loose collection (the ones not displayed) in archival bags in opaque clasp lid bins. If you’re in Greece you’re in a maratime climate. I live about a block from the Atlantic myself. I can tell you that car engines, metal gate/fence hardware in my area don’t last as long as they do inland. The salt and ocean moisture in the air is corrosive as hell. Keep them indoors. Please for the sake of your collection keep them indoors. Maybe a family member can let you store them for you.

If you are storing ARAH o-ring Joes then inside, away from direct sunlight is the best. Sunlight and changes in the temperature will discolor the fig and make the plastic brittle and crack the elbows amongst other things.
I really think the disparity between the heating and cooling rates of the plastic in the elbows and the metal rivet really causes the cracks. |

thank you all for the advice.
I collect only modern joes and other joe-related-compatible stuff. No arah stuff. I have a pretty big collection thats why the space problem. Indeed, I live in Greece. There is some humidity but in the summer the heat is a problem (100 Fahrenheit usually during the day) I hear you all. I will keep my whole collection indoors. No excessive moisture, no direct sunlight, no extreme temperature changes. I prefer less free space, than finding one day, that my figs or vehicles are destroyed due the weather conditions. That would be devastating! again, thanks for the input! |
