Modern Joes get the "weak hip" problem quite easily, some of them new out of package (well they are all at least a few years old at this point). The internet offers a few solutions that don't require surgery- superglue (possibly destructive so not advised), Pledge floor Wax (takes some time to set and is glossy), and Matte Modge Podge (just learned about this and it is dead easy, just brush on the hip post and work around. Thanks Oo).
Those solutions work pretty well but are somewhat temporary. There are also some ways that are more permanent, but do require surgery (unscrewing). Adding a few bits of tissue paper to the hip socket works relatively well. However, I have found a better solution- Model Magic. Model Magic is an air dry spongy clay that dries to a soft spongy texture. It is a prefect solution to the friction disk decay issue. It can be placed in the socket, sized and allowed to dry. Or one can make the pads in advance. Another option is to put wet Model Magic in the socket and screw things back up. I am testing this and it has gone well so far. I don't know if the Model Magic ever dries this way, but so far so good. |

Lube the hip ball with a dab of lotion and using hot glue in the ball joint area in the leg works, as well. Kinda like filling the head socket with hot glue and using lotion on the neck ball so it can pop back off. The lotion on the hip ball will allow free motion once the glue cools/sets. I'll have to try the model magic trick, though. Sounds like a nice, easy fix. Thanks for the share! Always nice to get one more way to skin the cat.

Hot glue is a great idea too. Why doesn’t the internet tell me that?

I just use a bit of pipe-thread tape. I use it for all loose joints, actually. It's quick, easy and works for as long as you want it to, but is also easily removable.

I have used Electrical tape which works in a similar fashion.

A light coat of super glue on the hip ball(after removing the leg), let it dry and then put the leg back on, has never given me any issues.

The nice thing about the Teflon pipe-thread tape is that it's ridiculously thin, stretchy and tacky without any adhesive. It conforms itself to what ever you're wrapping it around & makes it easy to get the exact right amount of friction in the joint by adding layers.
