Hey need a little help here jogging my memory. Weren't the GIJoe Marvel Comics actually released prior to their posted publication dates? For example, GIJoe Issue 1 indicates in the fine print of the Opening Splash Page "June 1982," but wasn't the comic actually released in May? I seem to remember that the actual release of the comics was a month ahead of the date listed in the fine print of the Opening Splash Page.
I'm doing some research for an article on my blog. So, any information you can give is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Jason |

I don’t know about the fine print page, but I remember the cover month being one ahead. At least that’s how I remember it, but then again I “remember” duke binoculars being light green.

Now that you mention it, I remember that as well. Usually they hit the rack maybe two(?) weeks before the month date on the cover, but it might have also varied by where in the country you lived in relation to the distribution location.

They did. My first issue was #4 (Oct 82 date) and I remember getting it when I went back to school in Sept.

US comics usually have cover dates ahead of when they actually go on the shelf. There's a reason for it, but I forget what the reason is. You could google for it, if you want. ISTR it's something to do with when they came off-sale on news-stands or something.

From Wiki:
The general practice of most mainstream comic book companies since the creation of the comic book in the 1930s was to date individual issues by putting the name of a month (and much later the year as well) on the cover which was generally two months after the release date. For example, a 1951 issue of Superman which had the cover date of July would have been published two months earlier from that date in the month of May, generally speaking. In 1973 the discrepancy between the cover date and the publishing date went from two months to three months.[2] In 1989 the cover date and publishing date discrepancy was changed back to two months, though generally each comic book company now uses its own system. There are two reasons for this discrepancy: first, to allow magazines to continue appearing "current" to consumers even after they have been on sale for some time (since not all magazines will be sold immediately), and second, to inform newsstands when an unsold magazine can be removed from the stands and returned to the publisher or be destroyed (in this case, the cover date is also the pull date).[1] I remember buying my G.I.Joe issue one not on the spinner rack but actually in the toy department with coloring books. Does anyone else remember that? Could that have influenced the date it hit shelves also?

2 months lead time on newsstand was common, also Direct Distro comic shops would get them even sooner.

Awesome guys! This will help me out a lot in what I'm writing for my blog! So, Marvel Issue 1 was actually released in at least May 1982, and possibly April 1982. So, this would put the GIJoe Marvel cartoon commercial in at least April 1982, and possibly March 1982.
Personally, I don't think I ever saw the Issue 1 Commercial as a kid. I remember seeing the Issue 11 commercial and some of the other issues. Like someone mentioned above, I think I found Issue 1 - the BIG version - on a shelf in a toy isle. But in reality, I think the BIG version was actually a reprint because if I remember correctly Issue 4 was the first Marvel comic I ever bought off the rack. Jason |

It’s funny you say that. When I was doing my custom Duke a little while back I could have seen worn the binoculars were green too.

That could have been a second printing. I go my first issues of Joe from the coloring book isle at TRU but they were in a plastic 3 pack. Later these 3 packs would be found in the isles where they had the cheat guides for the video games. Those were all second and third printings.
