Hey Joe Fans,
Well my curiosity is getting the best of me. Chime in here and let me know what you think is the best Modern Era Joecon set from the list below. Things to consider while voting for your favorite set: 1) Creativity of Theme 2) Sculpt and Playability of the set 3) Exclusives involved 4) Characters introduced and represented 5) Sentimental value 6) Fill in the Blank with your criteria here_______________ After you made your choice, mind giving a short reason as to why you chose that particular set?

October Guard
Both Cobra and Joe sets were great.

The only set that I still have all the figures from is the October Guard set. All other sets I either didn't get, or sold them off. That set was just awesome. The only characters that weren't new were the IG troopers, and they were enhanced over the retail IG's.

The only set I didn't buy was the Tiger Force. I just cherry picked. I sold off the crimson set. I only display a few from the Zombie set. Sky patrol I like but it could have been done better. BF2000 I like more than what I expected. The Marauders set is great if only we got the real Sarge this could have been 1. Now we are down to MB2 and Oktober guard. MB2 gave us Claymore and the best Wet Suit figure to date, a great Leatherneck, a "Mainframe" figure Satnd. A decent Dialtone and a kick ass Python Patrol set. The only downfall is the parts are now a bit dated. So I guess Oktober Guard takes the top spot. Both OG and IF teams are great. IMO each figure was done really well. I currently display every figure from the set add the FSS Dragonsky and it's icing on the cake!

Had to vote for 2012 as well, it's an exceptional set. The level of detail on each figure and they're all done perfectly, as if someone actually cared about quality control. Getting most of the October Guard is cool, and while I would have probably preferred a set of ARAH Cobras we're actually missing in modern era, the Iron Grenadiers provide a neat stylized take on Destro's troops. I don't know if they have a place in the comics or are just an original concept for the convention box set, but they have some very appealing designs.
I think the 2014 and 2016 sets are also pretty good, with the Toxo/Eco and Sky Patrol themes done fairly well so I picked those up in their entirety as well. The odd-year sets I cherry-picked figures from, primarily the Python Patrol, Tiger Force, Night Force, and Battleforce 2000 figures. The 2018 set I basically got the entire set just because it's the last one and figured it'll only go up in price over time despite being fairly mediocre, so might as well get them now. Except for 2018, I'd say the even-number years seem to have the strongest sets, but they all have welcome additions to the collection. Last edited by edgecrusher; 08-13-2018 at 11:02 AM.. |

I voted 2016 simply because it was my one and only Con.
My wife and I planned on going back in 2015, but she died. I wasn't sure if I was going to return to GI Joe, but I met another woman and she said I needed to live again! So I went and had a blast. The figures were kind of "meh" but I did like the Cobras.

Thanks for sharing such a heartfelt situation in 2015. Sorry for your loss, but props to finding a woman that supports your hobby. Good post |

Kind of interesting how you found a pattern with odd and even years and their likeability. I tended to like the sets you picked out as well. Strangely enough BF2K might be my favorite set. Simply due to it's completeness in getting all members all at once, and the refined molds they used on the Joes. Lots of love for the 2012 set. I agree it's the most well rounded and put together set. Both on Cobra and Comrads. 2011 still takes the cake for now regarding most expensive and nostalgic imo, but I can see 2012 passing it up eventually just based on some of the comments in this thread.

I appreciate most of these sets only more as years go by. For instance, I found the Sky Patrol set only mediocre when it came out, but have come around to liking all of the figures in the set.
It's a tough choice pinpointing which of these sets is my n° 1 all time favourite. My choice is kind of a tie between the Oktober Guard and Zombie Initiative sets. The Oktober Guard set is, as has been discussed before, sheer perfection in terms of quality. It brought us a heap of Iron Grenadier specialties we didn't even know we needed, but now can't imagine our IG army without. Plus, they brought back a favourite figure of my youth, Voltar, and gave him a near perfect brand new head sculpt full of personality and even provided him with a removable helmet. In the end I voted for the Zombie Initiative set because I really like the set's story and originality. It brought the Eco Warriors back in style, poured some personality into the foreign character Repulsor (which also doubles as an ME Sludge Viper!), delivered some great looking Arbco Lab-Rats and tied it together with a totally awesome Outback concept (I say concept, because it could have used a different head sculpt, the FSS one would have been perfect). Somewhere in the middle they also managed to mix in some Steel Brigade goodness (the con exclusive Steel Brigades Zombies and Steel Brigade Delta v2 are, while technically not a part of the con set per se, all kinds of crazy awesome). Also, the Toxo-Vipers and Toxo-Zombies! I just can't get enough of them! I liked the Zombie Initiative set enough to buy a second one months after the original release (just to hoard up on Lab-Rats, Toxo-Vipers, Toxo-Zombies and another Sludge Viper!). The only other con set I ever bought 2 of was the 2018 one, because Python Patrol just rocks (it seems I have a thing for the more vibrant color schemes of the late '80s - early '90s like Tiger Force, Eco Force and the likes, which is a bit weird because as a kid I didn't really like the neon colors all that much, so I guess that proves people cán change, no? :-)). |
