Yeah, I totally agree. And while I broke mine down into Army, Navy and Air Force groups, even that is a bit much for a terrorist organization, however large they might be. But I guess it works since they're technically an autonomous nation on Cobra Island.
But it does work better to have the larger, main structure of the military to be adequately trained to deal with a broad scope of scenarios (much like the real military does), and keep a small reserve of the elite soldiers to deploy when surgical precision is required. So in my mind, there are thousands of Cobra Troopers in basic support roles, hundreds of Cobra Vipers to form your infantry, and pretty much every other group would only have a few dozen squads. Because it would just be unfeasible to have, say, 300 Rock Vipers. How many vertical assaults do you think Cobra has going on at any given moment across the globe? I'm guessing not many. So a platoon of Rock Vipers (maybe 4 squads of 5 or 6 soldiers) would be plenty for their entire operation. I get that Cobra could feasibly be very big if you assume it is spread across much of the world, but if we assume Cobra Island is its main base, that's garrisoned by what appears to be a few thousand Cobras at most during the various comic stories that have taken place there. |

I get that Cobra could feasibly be very big if you assume it is spread across much of the world, but if we assume Cobra Island is its main base, that's garrisoned by what appears to be a few thousand Cobras at most during the various comic stories that have taken place there. So to me, Cobra needs to offer something more to those who follow their path. They need to promise a better life, a brighter future - something to believe in. They need to convince people that their cause is worth dying for. They need to convince them that the ways of established governments are fraudulent and restrictive to their individual goals. They need to advertise a revolution that will alter the entire world. And this starts small before gaining momentum. The more success Cobra finds, the stronger the grow. The more established they become, the more legitimate they appear, their ranks will expand. They can’t really do this by fighting countless skirmishes against a branch of the largest military force on the planet. They do this through their business ventures, which was present in virtually every form of media - the comics, cartoons and movies of any iteration. They amass wealth, all the while building a formidable military force. THEN they strike with surgical precision. But even then, it’s not with military force. Espionage, sabotage, false flag operations - this is what the Crimson Guard have been doing all this time, strategically whittling away at the vulnerable points of infrastructure and economy. In the end, Cobra may never have to deploy their soldiers to fight a direct battle. The majority of troopers will act as peacekeepers, aiding the people left vulnerable by the failures of their governments. Rebellions will rise, resisting against the threat of an unfamiliar armed force walking the streets of their home towns. But with the world economy in chaos, Cobra will rule. - Sorry, I got a bit off topic on the numbers game, but that essentially reflects the difficulty in defining a hard estimate of how large Cobra is. At various points along a timeline, their roster could be drastically different. The closer they get to their end goals, the more nebulous and larger they will be.

This is a really excellent thread, thanks for starting it!
I’m going to have to do some thinking before contributing, but I didn’t want to wait to give you the kudos you so richly deserve. Congrats on what looks like a pretty satisfying achievement, too!. |

Thanks! Like most of these kinds of projects I start, they tend to evolve and change constantly as I accommodate new ideas or streamline the overall concept. I've taken a step back myself to try a reevaluate some of the categories. I think I might work on hammering out a more definitive rank structure within the Cobra military forces. I was going through the figures individually and picking what modern era designs fit best, and what changes to colors and accessories I'd make, as well as padding out their training and active duty roles. But that ended up being a pretty big mountain to climb, and it became a bit overwhelming. So I need to step aside and tackle another aspect of this project. Hopefully I'll get back on track soon!

I've recently come across this site:
Net-Viper X's G.I.Joe Customization Archive I was interested in seeing if anyone had started a project with customizing vintage or modern GI Joe figures in more appropriate colors. The majority of us tend to gripe about the un-military aesthetics of most of the line post-'85, and in conjunction with my re-structuring of Cobra's military forces had also started dabbling in selecting color palettes more suitable for field combat forces. Then I came upon NetViper X's site linked above. Very impressive work here. I searched the forums to see if they were active here, and it doesn't seem like they've posted anything in about 5 years, so I have no idea if this individual is still doing the project or not. Their Cobra Recolor Project is very thorough, though it tends to select colors primarily by role - which is good for garrison uniforms, but blue and red (the original Viper colors) just aren't practical in the jungle or desert. So my own personal color schemes may vary a good bit, but there is a lot of interesting ideas here, including color-matching card artwork and original customs. My absolute favorite has to be the Cobra Strike 6-wheel troop carrier made from two Cobra Stingers. COBRA STRIKE Does anyone know what happened to NetViper X? As for my own project, I'm off work Monday, so I hope to utilize some of that time to get back to one of my many custom or writing projects. Something always seems to come up though.

I'm absolutely loving Netviper's recolorings.
In my Cobraverse, all the weapons specialist Vipers are the same colors as the regular Vipers. Environmental specialsts are drawn from veteran troopers with experience in the regular Viper Corps, so when a squad of Snow Serpents or Night Vipers, etc go out on patrol they don't need to bring along a HEAT Viper or SAW Viper for extra firepower, they have guys on their squad who have experience working in all those fields. |

Not trying to derail your awesome thread by any means, but I've done something similar on a less grand scale, due mostly to the fact that I'm currently working on some "blue-shirt" style customs. I love the "Viper" moniker but prefer the 1982-83 "blue-shirt" style uniforms. The only exception is that my Cobra Naval forces do not utilize "Viper" codenames. I just prefer "Snow Serpent" and "Eels" over "Ice-Viper" and "Hydro-Viper." Anyway, here's a rundown of my main Cobra forces. Mine kind of follows HissHissFangFang's "anti-Joe" theme i.e. anti-Grand Slam = Flak-Viper, etc.:
Air Force: Air-Viper - Cobra Air Trooper/Pilot (anti-Ace) Strato-Viper - Cobra Night Raven Pilot (Anti-Slipstream) A.V.A.C (Air Viper Advanced Class) - Cobra Fire Bat Pilot Army: Viper - Infantry Trooper (anti-Grunt) Viper Officer - Infantry Officer (anti-Duke) Tele-Viper - Communications (anti-Breaker) Motor-Viper - Assault Vehicle Driver (anti-Clutch) Track-Viper - Tank Driver (anti-Heavy Metal) Track-Viper Command - Tank Commander (anti-Steeler) HEAT-Viper - Bazooka Trooper (anti-Zap) Frag-Viper - Indirect-Artillery Trooper (Grenadier) (anti-Short Fuze/Hard Ball) Saw-Viper - Machine Gunner (anti-Rock n Roll) Flak-Viper - Anti-Aircraft Trooper (anti-Grand Slam) Toxo-Viper - CBRN Trooper (anti-Airtight) Pit-Viper - Security Officer (anti-Mutt & Junkyard) Medi-Viper - Medical Trooper (anti-Doc) Techno-Viper - Battlefield Technician Night-Viper - Marksman (anti-Lowlight) Gyro-Viper - Helicopter Pilot (anti-Wild Bill) Shock-Viper - Fire Assault Trooper (anti-Blowtorch) Para-Viper - Paratrooper (anti-Ripcord) Laser-Viper - Laser Trooper (anti-Flash) Nitro-Viper - EOD (anti-Tripwire) Bush-Viper - Jungle Trooper (anti-Recondo) Sand-Viper - Desert Trooper (anti-Dusty) Alley-Viper - Urban Assault Trooper (anti-Shockwave) Navy: Eels - Frogman (anti-Torpedo) Lamprey - Amphibious Assault Trooper (anti-Cutter) Snow Serpent - Polar Assault Trooper (anti-Snow Job) Crimson Guard - Elite Trooper (they stand alone from all other Specialties). Like Stormgard's comment basically all of my Cobras use the same uniforms "blue-shirt" design, with minor variations; except like Strato-Viper/AVAC and Naval Troops. Great thread! Jason |

Don't forget Night Creepers and, my favorite, Ninja Vipers. I guess they could fall under Covert Operations and Intelligence.
The only division I could see in Cobra would be between those that are strictly mercenary, and those that are fanatically loyal to Cobra Commander and "the cause". There are probably some Blue Shirts in Cobra that are just there because of a criminal background, and then you have Crimson Guard, who obviously are probably committed to more than a paycheck. I liken it to Bane's army in The Dark Knight Rises - some mercenaries mixed in with League of Shadow zealots. There was a running debate on IMDB about it. My feeling is that your standard contractor-turned-mercenary isn't going to stick around Gotham and wait for the bomb to detonate. Bane and Talia had "crazies" mixed in the bunch. |
