There is a proposed tariff on all goods coming from China. That means Zombie Lab, MGR, and all the smaller 1/18 businesses will start charging more for figures.
I worry that this will stall the momentum we have currently with 1/18 scale figures. Thoughts? Last edited by nightrattler; 07-21-2018 at 09:18 AM.. |

You’re not supposed to kick off political debates on here. Not a good idea.

Without taking a partisan stance, I think it’s safe to say that if it turns out to be a huge issue that badly distorts markets, it will piss off enough people to cause a change in leadership & policy in just a couple years. And if it isn’t impactful enough to cause that, then it’s probably not worth stressing out about too much in advance anyway. At least from a hobbyist’s point of view.
It will definitely suck for figure collecting, no question. It’s a clear negative from that perspective. But the hobby will end up being fine, one way or another... |

I read that Hasbro was moving production from China to India companies like Hasbro have partnerships in many countries that make product for them. The move from China make sense as the country and people make more money the production cost will increase and that means new markets with low cost labor will find new growth. I think any tariff is bad for toys as it only adds cost to the product which means less money for development and design and we pay more for figures. And for those that say this is political it's not it is a good question about what we will see down the line.

It’s hard to talk about specifics on this topic, but for now, it’s not a big concern or deal breaker. We’re not exactly talking about high dollar products here. Generally speaking, if a $25 Boss Fight figure goes up 20%, it’ll now be $30. Again, not a deal breaker! I already pay more than that for Joes; if I really want that Boss Fight figure, $5 isn’t going to deter me. Another example, if a $12 Marauder figure goes up 20%, it’s now $14.40. A one dollar Marauder accessory might soon be $1.20, but personally, that’s not going to break my piggy bank.

Very true. I've edited the title and as long as no one brings politics into the discussion, I'll leave this for now.

Tariffs are on things like raw materials, steel, and big-ticket items like electronics and vehicle imports, and the intention is usually to help higher-priced locally-produced goods compete in the local market with the otherwise-cheaper imports.
I fundamentally disagree with the concept of tariffs on an economic basis since they are a form of government regulatory imposition, or artificial intervention, in a market, but they are unlikely to be directly relevant to our hobby. It's extremely unlikely to impact action figures, even more so the third-party unlicensed stuff like MTF or third-party Transformers. Last edited by edgecrusher; 07-21-2018 at 08:36 PM.. |

Before the election, the BFS crew said they relied on imports from China, and a tax would straight-up sink their business.
