In the first few minutes of the original miniseries, Cobra attacks a GI Joe airbase with a type of fighter jet that we never see again (I guess it's before Rattlers were designed).
These are called Diamondbacks at the wiki (although no picture is shown). They look like they might be French-designed Mirage jets. What do people think?

Looking at pictures of the Mirage, they're not 100% but they're close.

They also resemble the Delta Dagger.
If I ever get my hands on a PTE J-10, I'm going to make a custom Diamondback with some Cobra stickers. It is not an exact match at all, but it is close enough for me.

Because the Sunbow animators didn’t have access to any COBRA toy aircraft vehicles from Hasbro other than the F.A.N.G. and the Viper Glider, they had to invent something for Cobra to use, and thus the Diamondback fighter was used. What would it look like?
Well, the newest single-engine fourth-generation jet fighter splashing across the news headlines of that time period in which those cartoon episodes were made was France’s Mirage 2000 manufactured by Dassault Aviation. It probably seemed as good of a design as any for the Cobra air legions to be using against G.I. Joe. In 1992 Hasbro would eventually sell a toy called the Cobra Liquidator A.T.F. (Advanced Tactical Fighter), but it was based off a much older Swedish aircraft (the Saab 35 Draken) than the more modern Dassault Mirage 2000 that Sunbow had previously used for the Diamondback fighter. I agree with Old Snake about this also resembling the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger interceptor.

The Mirage is a cool "villain" aircraft. They made the right choice.
Although I had the Rattler as a kid and loved it, now that I know what it is based on, it doesn't make a lot of sense as an air-to-air interceptor. In some ways, the Mirage would have been a better choice as the main Cobra fighter. It's very cool to rewatch these old episodes and see a lot of concepts on screen that don't quite match up with toys.

Like Play said, the only vehicles Cobra had the time of the first mini series were the HISS, FANG and Viper glider. The Rattler wouldnt be released for another year, so they needed some form of aircraft for them to attack in. If you think about it, the Rattler wasnt even a twinkle in Hasbro's eye when the first mini was drawn for story board. Sure Duke was in it because he had the mail away, but look at the Baroness, she was given her Comic look for the series since she wouldnt be a figure for atleast another year as well.

I think it appears again in COBRA STOPS THE WORLD at a South American Cobra airstrip.
It's interesting, as "proto Rattlers" appear in part 4 of The MASS Device miniseries. |

That's why I call them proto-Rattlers, like the Joes use Proto-SHARCS and we briefly see Water Moccassin and Swamp Skier "prototypes".
The weird flying things on the heli-carrier are sort of CLAW like. |

IMO looks like a 50s delta, especially the F-102 and Mirage III. And then the wing in the second picture is reminiscent of the Avro Arrow, with that forward sweep on the trailing edge.
The Mirage III would have been a highly logical choice for a Cobra jet— from the standpoint of the early 80s, it was a famous and successful aircraft in very wide use in the nonaligned market. It was still new enough to be somewhat effective, but was also definitely starting to age, and was probably easily available secondhand on the world market, & certainly parts were available. Along with the MiG-21, or 17 in a pinch, it would have suited Cobra’s needs as a startup pretty well. But that said, the animation shows a triangular vertical tail and those odd fairings around the nozzle, so I’d have to say it’s more closely a deuece, though maybe the real answer is that it’s a generic. I love Old Snake’s idea of the J-10 in Cobra blue— the original J-10, not the newer version with the DSI. I’ve had the same thought myself, and like to envision a pair of Cobra J-10s escorting Cobra Commander’s personal jet, which IMO just HAS to be this: http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.co...-Mikes/00.shtm |
