The gun in question isn't made for the toys until Destro v3 gets it in 1992. On the upside, it becomes much more available during the Battle Corps years as Gristle (The Headman's lieutenant), Major Bludd v3, Balrog v1, and Blanka v1 come with them. Several also come out in the 1997-2000s period (all in matte black). Fair warning: You'll have to sand down the handles if your want your vintage ('82-'83) Troopers to wield these. They're perfect for the 2004 Infantry team though.
For those of you asking about the gun the Joes are using, it's Snow Job v1's from 1983. Thanks to accessory packs and other sets, vintage versions are readily available as you should be able to use the one from AP #2 (in light gray), the Tactical Battle Platform (TTBP; 1985, in medium gray), or the Cobra Rifle Range (in Cobra blue). Updated versions can be found, thanks to Kenner's Snow Job (1998). Various versions continued to be made during the 2000s (mostly due to the Big Bens) in a few matte colors. None of them are in the color used by the cartoon -- The cartoon's XMLR-3A laser rifle is painted Tan, except for the rifle butt, barrel tip, and other small parts. Last edited by Cybertronian; 06-28-2020 at 03:37 PM.. Reason: I keep forgetting the 1997-2000's retoolings are no longer "modern", compared to the 25A/30A/50A toolings. |

Desto's V3 gun isn't really the Sunbow laser. You can tell because the clip on Destro's gun is curved and the Sunbow laser SMG is straight. The Destro gun is also huge for modern era figures, so it isn't that useful. I bought a bunch in hopes of it being a Sunbow laser substitute and it didn't work out.
The closest thing they've ever made was in the 25th era. It came with Flint in Disguise, BATs, Tomax and Xamot, Mass Device troopers, and some others.

Since most of my collection is ARAH, I bought about 5 of these to outfit my 2004 Cobra Infantry. There was a smaller, more rounded version made for the 25A figures. The first one released was in dark green for Tomax & Xamot. Later versions eventually turned up in black or gunmetal (dark metallic gray). I wonder... can the 25A versions fit in 1982-85 hands without stressing them... much?

The 25th version is closest to a U.S. grease gun with a sight and silencer. The cartoon version, though, is just a laser smg of some kind. Its a lot blockier than the grease gun.

This gun makes an appearance in Transformers that I had never noticed. Spike inexplicably wields it in The Insecticon Syndrome:

I always wanted that gun for my Cobra Troopers as a kid, so when Crazylegs came out, I had to get a couple of his guns for them.
