I think Cobra took a little from each of the countries you mentioned. Mix in some Sci-fi and the name of a snazzy car, and you got Cobra.

Hydra, but without Nazi legacy.
I think Cobra is a ultra populist party/movement.

I dont know about inspired by,a militant group of men in costumes hiding their identity infilitrating all facets of life and occasionally organizing into groups to spread terror? Sounds like the KKK.

Maybe just a little, but Cobra definitely has larger ambitions than the Klan, Neo-Nazis or even ISIS, and different motivations.
Personally, I prefer the early Cobra, when they had a few vehicles, more named characters and less Vipers, and were truly an underground, grassroots terrorist organization; later on, they became a standing army with incredible technology, and even their own island-nation. But, the toy line and comic had to expand, so it was inevitable that they would get bigger and better equipment. On the flip-side, groups like SPECTRE have only sought to infiltrate and either profit or destabilize, not outright conquer through military force. HYDRA kind of falls somewhere between the two. |

Agree with everyone else stating that it wasn't based on a nation. In the '70s and '80s Eastern European terrorist groups were a thing, as was the IRA. Those would have been primary influencers for creating a "ruthless, terrorist organization".

This is one of the most thought provoking threads I’ve ever read. I love it. Hama definitely went for more of a Hydra Formula at the beginning, but guys like Mike Costa who wrote the Cobra book, was definitely going for a more global threat. As time went on in the Marvel Run, And especially in the rebooted ARAH (IDW) I think Hama was more about borrowing from real history and foreign terrorist ideologies, but more so when he was writing an antagonist other than Cobra themselves. I am really enjoying reading people’s opinions on this thread and I hope it keeps growing with responses.

Definitely see a mix of real world examples that contribute to Cobra. Always thought of the Crimson Guard analogous to the Nazi SS.

From what I understand, Hydra was a big influence on the idea of Cobra. I see Cobra in three differnet stages.
As a kid in the early days of the Marvel run, I thought Cobra felt like a grassroots orginization and had some Klan and perhaps Neo Nazi vibe to it. Someone above mentioned the Crimson Guard and the SS. I agree, it felt very real, the neighbor you may know that has a hidden attic filled with a dark life differnet than what they display out front. Perhaps this was influenced by the days of people thinking neighbors might be hidden communists. As time went on and Cobra got bigger and bigger, I imagine it spread to recruit from terrorist states as well. Once Cobara Island was established, they grew into a country of their own.
