The Frontline story is one of my favorites, even with the sci fi angle. Duke, SE, Scarlett, Lifeline, Airtight and Frostbite go to Norway to check out an abandoned lab. They find out Cobra was doing some gene splicing.

The jet packs, Zartan, the crimson twins, ninja stuff, armies of remote control robots hidden in a swamp, and Cobra island were acceptable and fun. Serpentor was a step too far for me.

The thing about an elite military counter-terrorism unit is that the core special forces soldiers within the group are trained in a broad facet of all types of various combat skills. The Joes all have unique specialties that are applicable to only certain mission objectives. The same goes for their equipment and arsenals; a true SF unit allocates what’s available to them, or calling in support when needed. The GI Joe team essentially attempted to be their own branch of the military. So there really isn’t too many ways that the GI Joe unit readily reflects any real-world military force. It borrows from the military experiences of those that created it, but it’s pure fantasy.

That's an interesting point. I always considered GI Joe a little more realistic than Cobra, a non-governmental organization that has its own air force, tanks, and elaborate logistical network to support a massive military force.

In the cartoon, at least, the Flagg is loaned to them by the regular navy (and is commanded by an Admiral Ledger and crewed by normal sailors for a time).

As a kid, I was more realistic with leanings towards the future tech. Mainly liked the camo-guys and used to do Vietnam style patrols after being dropped off in the Tomahawk. I'm also a superhero guy, so Serpentor was just as realistic as creating a gamma-ray spawned monster, and radioactive spiders biting people. Cobra la stretched it a little too much, but was in line with the Savage Land of the Marvel Universe.
As an adult, I just embrace the wackiness of it all (Intruders, Aliens, Manimals, Eco-force, Zombies, Etc.) Have a real soft spot for Bulletman and the Intruders. It really just shows the strength of the core concept to allow it to go in so many directions. My wife was tickled to death at JoeCon when she saw the Eel figure with the torpedo firing shark. I ended up buying one for her. |

I've been re-reading the original Marvel ARAH series, and I have to say that I think the whole Brainwave Scanner story line is a bit hard to swallow. I think using it as an interrogation tool is plausible, but "programming" human minds is just... too out there for me. I know that the CIA had their whole MK Ultra project where they were trying to do this exact thing with LSD, and the results were invariably shady to downright reckless and wholly unethical. And while some people are more prone to things like hypnotic suggestion, I would think that members of the GI Joe team would have a sufficiently stronger mental constitution that wouldn't let them become influenced so easily as Rock'N Roll and Clutch were - by the Dreadnoks and Zarana, no less. And I know later in the series Storm Shadow and the Baroness (and Destro?) are all subdued by some sort of implant to make them faultlessly loyal to Cobra Commander, which is also just too far fetched for me. I haven't quite gotten this far yet, and I don't recall all the details, but especially with Storm Shadow - a freaking ninja - that an implant could force such independently strong individuals into servitude, it just seems ridiculous. I guess that's one of several lines in the sand for me.

I like my Joeverse pretty realistic and believable. I can put up with some guys with ninja training, but I don't need some mute, bulletproof ninja superhero like SE stealing the show. I gravitate toward the more realistic looking weapons and vehicles, although I'll also grant that certain things do exist today that were basically sci fi in the 80s. Look at the Pac Rats for example, or the Cobra CLAW.
I imagine Cobra as an immensely well funded private army based around strong charismatic leaders and extreme right wing principles, that attracts desperate individuals with little to lose. The wacky looking vehicles and bright outfits need to be toned down a little - I'm OK with Cobra troops wearing dark blue, but all those orange Parasite APCs and Paralyzer tanks need to be given a darker paint scheme. |
