The 3.75 inch line is resting right now and maybe never to return. The Brand will probably come back as 6 inchers. but who knows maybe Hasbro will have a bifurcated brand with premium 6 inch line and Basic Assortment 3.75 line (ala SW). I haven't had retail experience with Joes in a long long time, but during the last two times the Basic Assortment lines were on the market (VvsV and DG) did they pegwarm? The VvsV line has 10 characters while the DG line had 6.
To reduce costs figures would need limited articulation, but 5POA is not an option. The sweet spot for available molds and articulation is probably ROC/Resolute or later molds with limited articulation hands/feet elements. There probably aren't many frozen hands/feet mold still out there but who knows, they might be even more optimized. Also the figures of that era were quite robust (was it the plastic?) The Resolute line is probably a good starting point for figures as the movie ones may still incur payments to Paramount, not only that but there is current pentup collector demand for Resolute figures (looking at prices). Resolute was a little too dark, so Sunbowing the characters up a bit with some brighter colors and younger heads might be in order. 1 weapon and/or 1 webgear and/or (to appeal to the peaceniks and kids) 1 animal. How about a weapons pack in the mix? Also, broadly broadcast on the packaging free comics (Comixology Codes) and Free Cartoons (Tubi App). Sunbow toons look great on Tubi, check them out if you haven't. Plus the directing style was based on anime and animation was from Japan (Mass Device was excellent at the time anime), so current kids can grok it. Now which characters pegwarm the least? VvsV case had: Baroness x2, Storm Shadow x4, Snake Eyes x4, Tele-Vipers x2, Night Creeper x2, Sand Viper x2, Sgt. Stalker x2, Ace x2, Dusty x2 and KamaKura x2. DG- Duke, Shipwreck, Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander, Cobra Trooper, Storm Shadow. Joes (remember Sunbow them out): Duke, Scarlett, SE, Roadblock and Flint. Yes/no? Which others are more sellable? Cobra: CC, SS, Trooper, Crimson Guard, Red Ninja? It feels like there would need to be Destro and Baroness, but do they sell better than army builders? Which pack in animal should each figure get :p (kinda serious). What characters would sell, and also sell with a running change? Last edited by Bubbavader; 06-22-2018 at 05:18 AM.. |

I am pretty sure VvV basic line was pegwarming everywhere. CVS, Walgreens, Giant, K-Mart. Even with the free CDs.
DG I don't know since I only have Dollar Trees.

I don't see a line that can't sustain itself at retail coming back as $20 six-inchers in an age where action figure sales are down and even the Marvel and Star Wars 6" hit clearance. Maybe those Avengers movie 5 or 6 inchers with less articulation, which just about no one will prefer.
The VvsV single packs were $2 original. That's so cheap that it's sad now to think about. They were common where they could be found, but that last wave seemed to ship for a long time. The final 'new sculpt" single carded figures doubled in price, had no accessories and were on retro, albeit tiny, cards. Baroness? Don't believe the media hype. When readily available, the ladies DON'T SELL WELL. Jyn Erso might be the most peg warming lead Star Wars character of all time across all brands. Rey ain't doing so hot, either. |

Before too many hopes get up, if we do see a six inch line, I highly doubt they will be ARAH recreations in 6 inches.

Would a Basic Assortment be better as a 3x3 or 5x5 assortment. Since Rey and Jyn might have killed toysrus then no girls? Bye bye Scarlett and Baroness. Is Destro a chronic peg warmer? Would CC (maybe a warmer) + SS + troop builders be the way to go for Cobra?
If no Scarlett, Mutt and Junkyard instead? Kids love doggies. |

I am really not interested in 6" inch Joes. Now with TRU gone I really think that the only path for Joes is as premium collectibles. Modern era ultra detailed and articulated 4" with tons of accessories sold through retailers like BBTS, Entertainment Earth etc. For example, I am seeing a demand for Figma Figures. Those are from Japanese Company GoodSmile and are very high end figures, albeit larger but sell well at $70-$80. So detailed and highly articulated Joes selling for $25-$35 as collectibles are probably the way to go IMO.

Why entertain an unappealing hypothesis?

I think they should use the same molds, and characters they used for the DG figures, except, change out the current DG SE with the Ret. SE body, and change out the DG CC with the Ult. Ret. CC. Then every 6-8 months, just change the colors of the figures. Imagine a red DG CT, or Tan DG Duke. Give SW a white sweater and blue pants. Make CC red. It would be Hasbro's version of a BLANKS line. $6 was a great price point, and they were readily available, as the distribution to DG was great!!! I remember finding a figure at DG about 89% of the time, when that line was out.

I would love the DG Line continued. I could imagine they could skipped the card art and file cards, but is it that much of an added expense? I was happy with what the DG line was, but it must have seen the troop builder's fly and possibly Shipwrecks because he was so customizable. Duke as well. I think a 6-pack is too small and leads to peg warmers. 12 packs might be better. But what is the right combo?
1 each of a named character, with 4 in a case and then 4 troop builders x2 each? -8 separate characters (Maybe too many?) 2 each of a named character and 2 each of troop builders with 3 of each? -6 separate characters? (Might be a god mix, but I think will lead to peg warmers.) However having only one of a figure will certainly lead to hoarding. Unless they go all new. I mean if they put out 6 relatively obscure characters we would all buy them. Like back in the good old days when we got 12 new characters every year. Like Colonel Courage (Slit wrist Duke Repaint), Light-foot(Rehash Scoop), Rapid-Fire (Rehash Ultimate Duke) vs Sonic Viper Repaint, CG Immortal (CAT II Driver), Cobra Officer (POC Cobra trooper repaint) Repaint and repeat release in a second wave as different characters. I mean you could release a COBRA Trooper, Viper, Iron-Grenadier, Steel Brigade, Green Shirt, or a Crimson Guard in every wave and they will get bought.

Great ideas so far! Deluxe collectors figures would be fantastic, this is about a cost down basic assortment that would also move! 5x5 feels ike the right mix to me, but 6x6 could also work?
How about this for Joes: Sunbow Duke based on 50th flint or some such with toon blaster (cane be switched to Flint later), Black Ninja Duel SE with White wolf, Cost down JoeCon Sunbow spirit with freedom, Wave 1 Ret Roadblock with big gun (fixed hand but no bullet belt, Resolute head), SW with Polly or perhaps Mutt and an all black Junkyard. Edit- I don’t know how they could cost down Freedom, so maybe no Spirit? Cobra: Ult CC, Ult SS (both cost down), CT, Crimson Guard, and a weapons/gear pack (so 5x4+1). Or maybe who instead of weapons pack? Edit- that would be 7 named characters, 1 weapons pack, and 2x of each troop builder. Last edited by Bubbavader; 06-22-2018 at 11:32 AM.. |
