the dollar general line was spectacular. i wish they had continued it. i am kind of confused why they didn't. they sold extremely well. maybe the price point was too low and their profit margin wasn't what they wanted. if they sold em for $7 or $8, I'd still buy em all day long.

In an old thread it was mentioned that DG didn’t want to continue. Also there were lots of people saying they got them on sale for $3. Maybe the running change was the incorrect strategy and resulted in enough “Mommy I want the green snake eyes” and “Timmy, you already have a blue one” to impact sales?

My sources and observations indicated the reason the Basic line wasn't continued came down to a couple issues: 1. Production costs increased to the point Hasbro could not offer the line at the price point Dollar General was willing to pay. Keep in mind around 2013 was when we saw Star Wars (and most other brands) super articulated figures reach $13. Even with the compromises made, there just isn't a way to get a super articulated out at $6 in today's retail environment. And that was exasperated by.... 2. The mess made of the second GI Joe feature film saw broad abandonment of the brand at mass retail meant Hasbro didn't have a pressing reason to continue supporting the brand in that way. Keep in mind that Hasbro's $6 offering at dollar chains are 3 (yes, THREE) POA 6" figures.

I think you have to put some qualifiers on it first. Foremost, remember this figures had SUPER limited paint apps and weapon/accessories. I'm looking at the assortment now and It seems each character at most had three main paint apps and three accessories (not counting the stands).
So, with that said, here's my completely-for-fun made up case of figures: Storm Shadow (v49, "ultimate" mold) Iron Grenadier (basic black/red/gold) Firefly (classic colors) Beachhead (classic green) Destro (silver head) Then you would re-release the same wave again in swapped colors: Storm Shadow (in blue-green to be Ninja Viper update) Iron Grenadier (more grey tones) Firefly (green and grey reminense of V2 from the 90s) Beachhead (army green coloring) Destro (repaint head gold) |
