As we know not the Extreme and Savage lines were failures and deeply flawed. Savage as it was the wrong genre and Extreme as it was Kennered out (among other problems). But, they also had strong points- Savage figs were quite robust while Extreme was hip to the culture. What if Extreme was on the Savage buck? Would this have resulted in a one we remember as fondly as the nu sculpt era :p. ? After all, the POC line was effectively the above, just with better sculpting.

Build.
Who remembers the Nu sculpt era fondly???? Did you mean pre or post 25th? Because between the ARAH CE and 25th the all sucked. I liked Sgt Savage if only the were Joe size I think it would have been better recieved. The extreme figures were just crap. So had they been more like the Savage line perhaps it would have helped but both lines were nearly as well done as the ARAH. Hasbro should have just kept up with the what they were doing in 82-86 and not worried about what other companies were doing. Sales peaked in 86 and declines almost every year after. Sunbow should have continued the series and I think sales would have been a bit better.

Some of the villains were slightly visually interesting... but is there really any appeal in having a screaming, tattered shirt, roid-rager but with ARAH articulation?

eXtreme was Kenner's idea, so the idea and the figure style go hand-in-hand. The figures would've been more liked today, but I'm sure Extreme would've flopped anyway. Mid 1990's was not really the time of military toys, except well, 12" made a come back (anyone remember all the 21st century brand stuff at TRU?), but that had a lot to do with collector's market.
Sgt. Savage was meant to be a side show/side line like Star Brigade, then with ARAH cancelled Savage was made the main line, but without being fully realized as such (how else can you explain the Sgt. only having two of his Screaming Eagles made? And the second wave being just a repaint wave?) That's one reason why it petered out, the other was internal Hasbro politics. |
