Nope no shame.
At 36 I am far too old to give a shit what others think about my choice in spending habits. If they can't deal with the hell with em. |

My soon to be ex wife's family and her as well these days gave me a lot of crap about it. Not so much picking on me but more laughing at me which is worse the way I see it. Now I could care less but at the time it hurt pretty bad.

I want to add one more thing to this discussion.
About 15 years ago or so (my early 20's) I was the typical 90's sloucher...long hair, pot smoking, beer drinking loser. I had nothing going for me and I didn't have a care in the world. I barely worked and got by loafing around and expecting handouts from mom and dad. All my friends were the same way. Pathetic. I eventually grew tired of being a bum (thank god) and got a life. I'm clean and sober (for the most part) happily married, have two kids and collect toys. I love it. I'm not ashamed or embarrassed. It's who I am, it's what I like and now I'm known for being a "toy geek". If I have any shame it's how I once chose to live my life. I enjoy the simple things in life now and collecting toys is one of them.

Nope, no shame here. Been collecting since I was 8, and I'm 36 now. Throughout my life, I never was ashamed of anything I did or loved, even when I was a jock type in High School, which can be the most punishing of social environments. Never lacked for friends of the male or female variety. Now I'm happily married, still collecting joes, and playing with them with my 3-year-old son. My wife thinks it's funny, but she never complains because she has her own hobbies, so it's never a financial drama here.
After 28 years of no shame, it feels great to have stuck to that mantra my entire life. |

I used to be afraid to tell people that I collect toys and comics but after a while I stopped caring and now I take pride in my collections, especially my Uncanny collection. People that know me, know I went to school for toy design, so it's only natural for them to accept that part of me. And if people talk smack to me about it being childish, I laugh it off.

i was a bit embarrassed at first but then i just started showing it off and even talking about it and people seem to be pretty interested in it for the most part. i know my inlaws think i couls be spending my money on better stuff but that's not a reason to stop.

Most of society does not collect anything, much less toys, so they cannot identify...thus the ridicule and ignorance.
I admit, I am a bit comprehensive, not because I care what people say, it's just that you will more often then not be laughed at and automatically seen as a joke or "immature" because you "play with toys" in your mid-30's, and are not out rough-housing with men at a bar spending your paycheck on beer and trying to act macho. It might actually wreck a chance you have with someone who is making a first impression on you that does not grasp the concept of nostalgic representations from your childhood which most of us do consider art. The few people that I get around telling actually find it interesting, or are into it themselves, maybe not as much as I am but aware of it.
I don't collect to impress others though, this hobby is for me and me alone, if others show interest great if not I don't really care. |

I have always been the type that has never worried about what anyone thought of me. For one they don't make my money so therefore they can't tell me where and how to spend it. So for what it's worth "anyone," who has something to say can go to HELL.

F... the nay sayers man. Yeah sure i have been teased about it and even told to quit the hobby cause of my age but it is my interest not there's. I refuse to let anybody else tell me how to live my life, and if they still have a problem with it then the conversation is done because i simply don't have time to waste upon such a person.
