Like the title says,do you guys think repro labels lower the value of vintage vehicles and playsets? I for one love the repro labels(just for the record)but if I were to apply them to a vintage skystriker, because they are not the original decals does it diminish it's value? Would a skystriker with dingy and dirty(but original)decals be considered more complete and 100% vintage over one that has new repro decals on it and looks case fresh? I happen to love the repro labels, and have them on nearly all my 80's Joe vehicles and playsets and since I never plan to sell them I guess to me it's a moot point, but for those that may have to sell do you think it might hurt your vintage toys re-sell value? I have never seen a listing on the bay for a vintage Joe vehicle with repro labels on it,so I don't know how to guage this question. All the vehicles I have ever seen on the bay come with original decals.Do the sellers know something I don't?If it did not diminish the value would they not clean them up a bit and add new decals to get a cleaner newer look thus creating more profit for themselves? This is where you Tankers come in,give me your opinions on this.

I doubt it. The stickers are practically indistinguishable, and most people would probably get them as replacements anyway.

Well in theory since the repro stickers aren't the original then yes it would decrease the value.

this is a great question, to me i dont think it would hurt it in value, honestly if i were buying a vintage skystriker for example, i would rather have it with new looking repo stickers then old dirty original stickers that are peeling off.
as long as you applied the repo stickers well then i dont think it would hurt the value much. i meen i would typically try and find a vehicle that had its original stickers in mint shape but with these vehicles being 25+ yrs. old, its hard to find them that way.

If anything, I think it would increase the value if you were to put the item up on ebay. People who collect want sharp looking vehicles and the sharpest around are the ones who have been lovingly restored. I've done it/or hae decals for nealy every vehilce I own. Put up two auctions: a skystriker with beat to hell, peeling, oozing decals that are in the wrong places against one that's been restored with new decals put in the right places and my money's on the latter.

I think it should increse the value and not lower it. I pulled my skystriker out of storeageand when i saw the stickers i almost cryed. They were all shot. glue eveywhere and sliding off. Then i found out they make repo sticker and i got a smile. I would pay more for better stickers then dirty old ugly ones.
I just replaced my skystikers decals and it looks right out of the box now. I was able to clean up the stickers on the fins and are the only ones original.

For me, a large part of the joy of picking up old Joe vehicles is the chance to restore them. I've done so with a WOLF, Hammer, Killer WHALE, Rattler & Bugg, and I'll be doing so with a General & Locust in a week or so. When I get my Defiant back to the UK in June, I'll be restoring that (repairing minor damage, putting on new huge blue doors, replacing some parts, and completely restickering it). I can't wait to get started on that bad boy...
I don't think that the application of repro'd stickers should have any real impact on the value of a toy unless the buyer is a dyed in the wool purist. As long as the seller mentions that the stickers are repros, I don't see any harm in it. Personally, I'd much rather have a displayable looking vehicle than a tatty old wreck with faded stickers any day. |

This is an interesting topic. When I am done building some small 1:26th scale muscle cars for my son's room I plan on restoring my vintage Joe vehicles and I wondered about this.
In my opinion, if you are selling the vehicle to someone looking for 100% authenticity then yes it will devalue the vehicle. But, if you are restoring it for your own nostalgic reasons or someone is buying it for nostalgic reasons than I don't think so.

Who really cares if stickers are repro or not! Good luck finding originals decals in top shape. Be happy if u have that paticular item, I mean one can restore a vintage automobile and with all that work done it will cost more than an original that has old original parts that are showing age. To me if it makes one happy then slap them on and enjoy!!!
