I noticed over time where G.I. Joe borrowed ideas from different shows. movies, Sci-Fi etc.
Here are some: Mobile Command Center = Sandcrawler ( Star Wars ) Thunder Machine = Mad Max vehicles Dreadnoks = Mad Max thugs but yeah also Ewoks Hasbro wanted to incorporate those ( it's similar namewise) because they were popular. Swamp Skier = Speeder Bikes Sci-Fi = Robocop ( the new ROC accelerator suit Duke as well) Destro = Crystal Boy from Space Cobra. Also his voice is reminiscent of Darth Vader. WORMS = Rocketeer I know there's a lot more...

All shows/lines/creations/etc.. do that, not just Joe.
The main design elements of the early Joe characters was the Viet Nam era of uniforms and looks of soldiers. That's one of the reasons for the update in RoC, because the looks were so dated.

The Rocketeer has been around for years, at least the comics and such have, the movie was 91.

Define relevant? Chances are that the person that made the design knew about the Rocketeer and got the influence.
He's not saying that these were the inspirations for it, just that they were modeled after it.

That's quite a stretch though. I don't think the look was borrowed so much as it was accidential.

I can see that happening especially if the design team had a Rocketeer fan in their midst. When I see things like Repeater and his Steadi-cam Machine gun coming out 2 years after the Smart-Guns used in Aliens, I definitely see the inspiration. There is also the DTC RHINO which had to be heavily inspired by the APC used in Aliens.
