This week we were surprised with the announcement of Hasbro's own crowdsource funding campaign for a larger iconic Star Wars vehicle.
This spurred some discussion amongst the G.I.JOE community about possible G.I.JOE or Cobra products that could be produced through this method. A SurveyMonkey poll has been created to gauge interest in specific items. It is broken down into different categories. Once the poll runs for two weeks, a new poll will be created amongst the winners in those categories. Here is Hasbro's mission statement for HasLabs: Quote:
HASLAB is Hasbro's new crowdsourcing platform that hopes to bring dream products into the hands of fans. With your support, our goal is to make products that are trophy items both in significance and size that fans have been clamoring for. Once the campaign is backed with the minimum number of backers as listed by the deadline, Hasbro will bring the product to life.

This survey would be better if you included options for those of us who do not collect (or do not have space for, or do not want, or whatever) vehicles/playsets, but who would be all in on a crowd-funded set of modern era figures. For example, original series ('82-'94) ARAH figures that haven't been done in Modern Era form yet.
Without a representation of that audience segment, we're not really showing Hasbro the full market interest that would be present for new Joe items, which is quite likely to be larger than those interested in just vehicles or playsets. Most who are interested in vehicles or playsets are likely also interested in figures, but those of us with no interest in vehicles or playsets currently have nothing to fill out in that survey. Perhaps add a question to the effect of: Would you be interested in crowd funding additional Joe figures in Modern Era form? Yes/No. As long as users can submit the form with just that question filled out, you'd be capturing more than just vehicle interest. Last edited by edgecrusher; 02-19-2018 at 11:53 PM.. |

Some thoughts on the poll options: * As some have stated before, I don't know if retooling an existing vehicle is a great idea through this platform. Let's take the WHALE as an example, as it seems to be highest on most people's lists. Would I pay $60 for a WHALE @ retail w/ Cutter and another figure... ABSOLUTELY. However, would I pay $150-$200 as some people are suggesting as a price point through HasLab... NO WAY IN HELL. That price point is TOO HIGH for this community to support if multiple thousands have to be made. How about the Renegades Coyote?... again, would gladly pay $50 for this with Ren Flint and Lady Jaye @ retail. However, the Renegades line was too short lived to have that kind of financial support from the community. The O-Ring people have no connection, and the toys do not fit in with the modern era aesthetic. This leads me to an un-released ARAH vehicle. In my opinion, this is the only viable option. The O-ring guys do not already have one, so they would be in the market to add to their collection along with the Modern Era Collectors. You would need both sides to support something this big! |

For one thing that would be a massive poll while there are still many figures that collectors want. Secondly it does not fit in with the purpose set out by HasLabs to create items of significance in size, scope or as a trophy item. For those reasons I left that option off the survey.

The purpose statement of HasLabs is flexible enough to accommodate a release of a series of figures ("significance in scope") not just vehicles/playsets ("significance in size").
It doesn't require adding a huge list of figures to the poll. The objective of communicating level of interest in figures in general can be accomplished with one simple question, perhaps the one I proposed, to show the level of interest in a series of figures. And if the data makes it to Hasbro, who knows, it might even influence them to consider another wave of 50th figures in 2019 in advance of the new movie products in 2020.
