I don't know if I am the only one but in this era of big budget TV shows, I would prefer GI Joe to be rebooted not as a movie but as a television program. I've thought a lot about how to do this and here's my pitch for the pilot. Would love some feedback and maybe develop this idea even more for fun.
Pilot - Three hour special with commercials Moscow, one cold winter's morning in the present day. During a series of high level meetings of the Putin government, we see three figures dart in and out of the Kremlin. The first is a bit of a nutter, looking like some hi tech fanboy on steroids. This is Scrap Iron, explosives expert. There's another figure in gray camo, quite mysterious, I am sure you know who this is. The third appears to be some sort of expert in disguises. Between the three of them they infiltrate and destroy the Kremlin in spectacular fashion. Meeting of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Russia is officially blaming Syrian separatists on the attack (Putin is severely injured but not dead) but the JCS isn't buying it. They quickly rule just about EVERYONE out and the attack seems to have no political motive. At the meeting is Agent Phil Provost, CIA expert in counter terrorism. He theorizes this is some sort of new group with paramilitary experience and suggests calling in Colonel Abernathy, a semi retired officer who got a rep for getting the job done but not necessarily following the chain of command. Reluctantly they agree. Cut to Springfield, a decent sized American city in a horrible economic depression. We follow Abernathy on his way from picking up some groceries, yes I'm serious, to his modest home. Along the way he notices an increasing number of street corner agitators but the odd thing is they are not attacking either the conservative or liberal scapegoats but BOTH of them and with a viciousness he's never seen. He gets into a debate with a particularly charismatic speaker, and despite being "right" gets out talked and booed away pretty badly. He gets home and talks about it to his wife, his idealism from years of service is fading. He gets a call from Provost and comes to Washington. The CIA is out of ideas about this attack, but as Abernathy travels, another major attack occurs, same MO, this time on American soil (not sure which landmark ends up destroyed) and again the wrong people are suspected, Assad supporters, creating an even tenser situation between the US and Russia. Abernathy suggests that possibly some new group is stirring up the pot, but the usual nations that might try this seem innocent. Provost suggests activating an old idea of Abernathy's, a counter terrorism team of the best of the best called GI Joe. He agrees reluctantly, hoping to use this experience to get his optimism about his country and his world back. We see scenes of his eight picks in action as he recruits them, Snake Eyes, Scarlett, Roadblock, Flint (kind of a Han Solo renegade type), Lady Jaye (re-imagined as a streetwise Latina former gang member who finds Flint's pretty boy white privilege act grating), Breaker (I kind of what to make him Asian to make this a diverse group but would that be a bit of a stereotype), Clutch (a sexist 80's throwback but the best driver in the service) and Wild Bill. The PIT is set up and we see their first vehicles, versions of the RAM, Hammer and Tomahawk (heck you need toys for the kids). Over the course of the episode the team is able to figure out a disguises expert is at work and gets footage of Scrap Iron from the Russians courtesy of a Colonel Brekhov. Scrap iron's most recent contact was a Major Sebastian Bludd, a mercenary officer so vicious even the North Koreans kicked him out. Bludd's mercenary force is currently stirring up trouble in the Congo, and that's where the second half of the episode occurs, with the Joes coming together for the first time. We meet Bludd in his field tent and he accepts payment for putting together the team from a Baroness Anastasia, who gets out of dodge just before the Joes show up and after a fierce battle, defeats Bludd's team and captures him. The Joes are congratulated for a job well done and the Pentagon debates shutting them down as the mystery is solved. Meanwhile the Baroness' plane lands in Springfield, to an innocent looking shipping company (MARS industries) and she heads to its underground headquarters, where she meets the street corner debater who got the better of Hawk. He explains that it's time to announce themselves to the world and that Bludd was just a hired scapegoat. He calls Firefly and tells him to proceed. In Boston tourists are enjoying a day on the Freedom trail when explosives go off just under it, a trail of explosives and fire that destroys nearly the Entire Freedom trail, the final shot being the Pentagon and the Joes, on separate monitors, watching this in horror as the destroyed Trail slowly takes on the image of a giant Cobra. |
