The big problem with scale is that Joes are intended as toys and therefore scale is not a huge priority. The model-building community can be nitpicky about scale, especially when you hang out with the 1/6 customizers (just for example). This is most evident when dealing with Joe vehicles, because the goal of the toy is to make a shell just large enough for the figure to sit in. As a result, we end up with aircraft with these big huge bubble canopies and tiny little dorked-up airframes.
The other big problem with vehicles is that there is a significant degree of squishiness when it comes to the human body and padded seats. Because the toys are made of rigid plastic, it's entirely possible for a vehicle to be 100% correct in scale and yet still not accomodate a GI Joe figure - mostly because of the limited range of motion in the figures and the unyielding nature of the material. |

That is pretty fun. I'd like to see the modern figures done this way. I imagine the Rock would be 6'5. there are some tallish figures out there, like wild bill that aren't massive.

I think 1:18 scale works very well for action figures, but it isn't really the best scale for vehicles for the reasons noted by Solosam. As a Lego builder, I often find the opposite problem with minifig scale - vehicles often end up bigger than they should be compared to the people.

I will never understand how the so called 1:18 die cast cars never fit Joes. I can remember even back as a kid the o-ring figures wouldn’t fit.
The point solosam made about the “give” in the seats makes sense, but still the floorboards are too shallow and the steering wheels are too low. 1:16 cars work well for Joes but are hard to find. Perhaps 1:18 die cast is not true 1:18? |

Perhaps 1:18 die cast is not true 1:18? (As a note, the original Luke Skywalker figure from kenner was 3,8" so even at that time "real" scale wasn't a thing) Also take into account aesthetic, some figures have a more cartoony approach to them, making heads, hands or feet exceedingly large. Or by comparison they are heroic in their measurements, thus will not fit under the steeringwheel. 1:18 scale action figures would better be described as approximately 1:18 scale figures to avoid confusion. And the whole 3,75" thing has to go, figures are 4" these days. |

Except for Star Wars, which remains closer to 3.75''. Several other recent movie-branded lines have trended towards 3.75'' rather than 4'', possibly because they were targeting the Star Wars collector market rather than the military figure collector market.

That is a good point, in fact there is still people who started building their Star Wars universes in the late 70's and they still are not done so it is a good thing the new releases are totally compatible with the first ones. Markets based on nostalgia is possibly one of the most profitable.
