Whew! This is a tough one.
Where to begin? As most have already said, it's mostly good childhood memories, my first figures were Flash and a Cobra Trooper,(which were for me the best figures ever) then i started to read the comics, hated the cartoon, but i haven't stopped loving the brand. The characters, the filecards, the vehicles, the names, the comics... It's impossible to point just one thing that made G.I.joe great. So, for me, G.I.joe is more than just toys, it's a story full of interesting characters, where you're not just rooting for the good guys to win, but also for the villains, because they're just as interesting. G.I.joe is just awesome

Great thread guys! I enjoyed reading your experiences.
I stumbled on Gi joe circa 84/85 when our neighbours grandson would visit in the summer. We would mostly play with our Star Wars figures in each others gardens, then one weekend he came back from town with new toys/figures. They looked So cool! I asked what are these? "Action Force" he said. We played with them non stop, i always remember how fascinated i was with Storm Shadow...being 10 years old back in 85 i had know idea what a ninja was?!? and either did my friend he told me this guy(stormshadow) was wearing bandages cause he got blown up lol Any ways so the next weekend i got myself a few Joes & Cobras and over a few months amassed quite a collection of figures and vehicles. My favourite was the Water Moccasin with Copperhead. During these times my passion for this line of toys was fuelled by the Battle Action Force comic, i don't recall anything about the cartoon back then. As i approached my teens i sold many of my Gi Joe toys to fund my interest in skateboarding. Fast forward some 30 years i'm now 42. Outta pure nostalgia and feel good times, I have a focused collection of 9 Cobra villains from licences Sideshow, Hasbro & Kre-o the characters include Destro, Cobra Commander, Baroness, Firefly, Zartan, Major Bludd, Stormshadow, Cobra trooper & Crimson Guard. It really is amazing after all these years i still get a buzz from these characters awesome brand. |

Has anyone ever wondered if their childhood friend(s) post on here, but have no idea it's them? This thread made me think of my buddies Travis and Donnie, the three Joe-Migos. Thanks for a great thread Xero!!

I was a member of this site years ago. My family suffered a tragedy and it's taken some time to get our lives back in order, back to a point where we feel alive instead of just going through the motions of life. I've always checked in, from time to time, to see the latest G.I. Joe news, but never felt compelled to join in any discussions. Then I read the title, "What is G.I. Joe to you." So, I re-registered, and BAM! I'm back. I feel I need this in my life now. So here I am. A little older, a little wiser, a little more mature, and much more humble.
I was a Master of the Universe kid. I still remember how I was introduced to MOTU. My mom went to a Tupperware party down the street and dragged me along. The lady hosting the party has a son a year younger than I, and my mom insisted I would enjoy playing with him. I resisted, followed my mom down the street pouting and whining. The lady let us in, introduced me to her son. He was sitting on the floor playing with these toys I had never seen before. He started going through each figure telling me there names and powers. I was hooked. After days of begging, my mother finally bought one for me: Trap Jaw. The rest is history. A few years later, and I can't for the life of me remember how or why, but my mom bought me Zartan. I played and played with that guy! Eventually, my He-Man collection dwindled and my Joe collection grew. I believe that was the same year I received my first Transformer, Mirage. To this day, I'm still buying and collection both Transformers and G.I. Joe. So, what does G.I. Joe mean to me? Well, I was an only child. It was just my mother and I (and my grandparents who helped watch me quite a bit)until I was 8 and my mother married my step-dad. I had a VERY active and insatiable imagination. Toys were a release for that. I could entertain myself from the moment I woke up, until bedtime. I enjoyed the comradery, the bravery, and crazy threats the Joe team faced. It was neat, to me, how each Joe had a specialty and a place within the team. I loved the bios, too! It was especially exciting when a Joe was from a town or city close to where I grew up. It made the Joe world all the more real to me. Today, it's a hobby that gives me an escape from the everyday trials and tribulations of adulthood. I enjoy the nostalgia. I joined the Marine Corps when I was 18. It was fun to learn and see things that I knew from watching and playing G.I. Joe. In fact, one day my unit was participating in some urban training and we were performing missions in the underground sewer tunnel system. Due to my smaller height and size, I was able to run and maneuver through the tunnels and portholes quicker than anyone else. One guy in the unit started referring to me as Tunnel Rat. Needless to say, that started a friendship between us that still lasts today. I never got into the comic. There wasn't any place to buy comics in my little podunk town. I wasn't even aware that there was a comic book until I was an adult. I've vowed to collect and read the entire series, but that is a vow I have yet to fulfill. I still plan on it, though. I just love G.I. Joe. That's all there is to it. The current state of the brand is depressing. Collecting has slowed down greatly. The only offerings are collector's club figures and convention sets, and you have to take out a loan just to afford any of it. I know Hasbro has mentioned the "re-imagining" of the brand and that worries me. Personally, I think Hasbro needs to revive the modern era/classics line. When the 25th Ann. figures came out, people (collectors) went crazy. I believe we carried that line. If Hasbro could just 're-imagine" bringing the line back from the beginning, applying the more intricate detailing and articulation we see in the current Star Wars Black Series line, I think it would be a hit. Well, thanks to anyone who took the time to read this. I know it was long and probably boring for most of you. It's good to be back. Future posts won't be so long and pointless. I promise. Yo Joe! |

On the contrary Sgt Dwight; your post is not boring at all. Sorry about your hardship, and welcome back.

I have thought about that some myself. During my GI Joe peak, I lived in Sarasota FL. Shout out to Matt and Greg and all those friends who contributed to my collection through B-day and Christmas gifts.

I remember the first time I saw Joes with vivid clarity. Up until that fateful trip, my brother and I played with Playmobil stuff and a few Legos. Then, we head into town and go to a local store, since out of business called LaBelles, we turn a corner and there is this line of toys called Gi Joe. We were stunned. They were so realistic and cool looking. We begged our Mom to let us get Joes instead of Playmos and she let us. My brother got the Ram cycle and I got the Whirlwind.

I grew up in a super small town(s) Never really had any "Joebros" back then. I was an only child and lived on a farm (but did not farm, figure that one out) What GIJOE is to me is too vast a subject to begin to tackle. It would take several sessions, and many hours, and the shrink would get bored. I can let out little bursts of memories here and there. However to encapsulate it into one post is not adequate enough space or words...much as I would like to.

Christ...me too.
Many of these stories are my childhood and teen years explained by someone else . Parental divorce included. I'll be succinct and simply say GI Joe was my teacher. It taught me to negotiate, aspire, read, use the internet lol, save money , venture out into the world as a pre teen / teen , share and understand masculinity (albeit in an exaggerated form early on). And it taught me empathy. I can't think of another toy brand that i'd want to share with my future son and that i'd feel comfortable with knowing that he'd learn some valuable lessons & develop some great skills from (reading being one of them. Great filecards) . |

Sorry my initial post was so long. I just got wrapped up in it.
One point that I neglected to mention was the Sun Bow cartoon. Now, being into Joe from 82 and not having access to comics until the reprints hit TRU shelves I was, and will always be, largely a file card man. Though I felt the cartoon got very corny around the Pyramid of Darkness (though I really Enjoy Arise Serpentor, later on)I remember vividly running home from school to catch the initial airing of The MASS device on it's initial run. Normally my friends and I would dawdle home but not that day. Good times.
