Joe to me is family. My story isn't as touching or inspirational as most. My eyes teared up a little while reading some. Probably shouldn't be cutting onions while reading. GI Joe was not a major toy in my childhood. Lego was my toy of choice although that had more to do with my parents than me. They thought Lego was a better toy for imagination. The Joe of my childhood was the Sunbow cartoon. Every day, be it morning or afternoon, I watched GI Joe and those were the Joes I wanted. Duke, Scarlett, Shipwreck, Quick Kick, etc. Those were not the Joes my parents bought me. I liked the one I did get, but by and large they weren't the best characters, so they have become more tokens of memory for the family members who bought them.
I love Hama's Joe writing and prefer it now, but Sunbow defines the characters for me, even Cobra La. Now, Joe is something I share with my young son. By sheer coincidence he was watching Rise of Cobra on my computer on vacation and suddenly my four year old was all about GI Joe. He was hunting Cobra Commander through the woods at 4 years old and wanted to be GI Joe for Halloween. I dug out my old guys and he was creating stories at five and watching Sunbow. I got back into Joe and started building my collection, and my son's grew as well. Now he's eight, reading the Hama-verse, and we are going to Joe conventions together scouting out new figs. Baby sister is all about the Joe Ladies, too. So Joe didnt really get to be anything other than entertainment until my kids, now it's that and more. |

So anyway, by that time the characters we got were either the second and third stringers, or updated versions of the original cast. It was always cool to get a figure like Duke or Snake Eyes, even if they weren't in their original costume. And that's one thing I did appreciate about the comic. As a grown-up you can see the cracks caused by the stress of constantly adding too many new characters, but as a kid it was fun that the comics kept pace with the toys. |

Some of my greatest memories from childhood involve playing with G.I. Joe figures with my younger brothers and cousins. After school, I would put all my Joes into shoe boxes, put the boxes into a paper grocery bag, and ride my bike with my brother 4 blocks to my cousins' house. We would watch the cartoon, then go outside and play with the toys, building bases in the planters and battling Joes vs Cobras until it started to get dark and we had to head home for dinner. On Sundays after church, we would all gather at Grandma's house for more Joe vs Cobra battles. We would build Joe bases in the cabinets in the living room, while the Cobra base was set up across the room, or even in another room entirely. The best was summertime, when the Joes entered Grandma's swimming pool, where my SHARC and my cousin's WHALE would battle against my other cousin's Hydrofoil and my brother's Eels.
G.I. Joe was a heroic team of American soldiers using their specialties to "Fight for freedom wherever there's trouble." We fought over Land, Sea, and Air. (and snow, and mountain, and desert, etc). It was the perfect blend of so many things I loved - America, military, action, courage, heroism, vehicles, specialists with unique equipment, a team that fought a terrorist enemy determined to rule the world, etc. Alternatives to G.I. Joe in the 80s were stupid: 101 versions of Batman, ugly thunder cat-people, magic-based he-man, micro-vehicles that couldn't hold figures, etc. There was nothing that screamed cool like G.I. Joe with its realistic vehicles that could hold the unique military figures, supported by a thrilling cartoon for the younger kids and an action-packed comic series for the older kids. I love that I have been able to share this with my son and nephews. We had some cool battles with his G.I. Joe figures (and with his G.I. Joe Kreos more recently) in his room during family gatherings at our house. I hope that G.I. Joe A Real American Hero continues to battle Cobra for decades to come, so that I can share that with my grandsons someday. |

I loved Kre-o, warts and all. Easy and cheap to army build and if you wanted something that wasn't at retail? Build it. My son likes them too, he makes some interesting customs. |

Gi Joe will always fill me with joy because it is so integral to my childhood. I dabbled in a few other lines like Centurions, Exosquad, but with the exception of Robotech, nothing every drew me away from Joe. Robotech had more adult stories I liked in high school but when I got back into collecting it was almost exclusively back to Joe.
To me Gi Joe is everything that was right about being a kid. I loved the 80s and the toy lines it produced, but nothing will ever beat Gi Joe. |

Joe like MOTU and Star Wars were around before i was born but my brother introduced me to them immediately. My earliest memories are of buying Joes from Ames and K-Mart. I remember buying Law & Order and opening them before we left the store lol. The line was something my brother shared with me in so many ways. We would play with the toys and share everything, watched the show, he read me the comics, and we would play military at the creek or in our barns. While my brother went down a different path and away from me, I would still tell him about the new toys I got when I would see him. We don't speak now but Joe makes me remember him when he was a good brother and all the things he taught me. I became creative and artistic partially because of this line. It made me develop a pride in our country as a kid. Unlike MOTUC I have not been a completist for Joe. I find myself collecting the figures i like or have nostalgia for and I think its because of the memories with him. He always made fun of the bright colors in the 90s even though i was still buying em but the updates of those characters don't appeal to me, I'm looking at you Sky Patrol.
Overall Joe has been nothing but a positive for me. Road Pig was always a character I loved cuz he was big and I site him along with He-Man, Arnold, and Hulk Hogan as the reasons Why I have weighed 300lbs since I could pick up a weight. These silly hobbies that had me judged as a kid have made me into me. Like so many others here Joe shaped them in a positive way. NO ONE will say it has been detrimental as a human, maybe financially lol but not in terms of what type of human being they are. I hope more generations get to know about G.I. Joe. Our nation specifically needs a good escape that promotes the general well being. |

Good thing Hisstank has no LIKE button. This thread would probably blow up the host's servers, or something....

It does have a rating system, top right, that you can cast your vote with stars.

GI Joe to me when I first bought Breaker and RockNRoll and now are about stories. The file card gave me insight to these people and gave them personalities. When I ordered Duke through the mail, read his file card and found out he was born semi close (I'm from Kansas) it gave me a leader and a personality that was inspiring. From then on, these characters, these stories grew. Crash land on an island and discover dinosaurs, or alien technology (the underside of the old pick up truck was an ancient alien spaceship), to building a tree house and having the Joes discover a primitive people that lived in trees, to exploring deep holes in the earth, to having a huge fighting tournament to rank all the Joes fighting skills, and all sorts of other adventure. It was a conduit for my imagination, for re-creating my favorite sci-fi stories with characters that I loved. To this day, that is what goes through my mind. Always a story and always integrating a story in my head with the story of my Joes.

GI JOE means so much to me. I grew up with it as a kid, loved its return 10 years ago and have been interested in them since. Growing up GI JOE was all the father figures I never had. My Dad was around and was a good dad but I think GI JOE invoked a courage, leadership and determination that wasn't translated in my family life.
One of my favorite lines ever is Quick Kick discussing the BET at the beginning of the movie talking about drove through the night and that attitude inspired so much of my 20s and 30s. Quick Kick is still one of my favorite characters.
