Legacy characters are nothing new, man. The Flash got replaced with his sidekick back in 1986. It's not some evil ess-jay-woo agenda.

I guess it seems most likely that they're just a general amalgam design using a bunch of different Cobra soldier bits. |

It's probably not the case with IDW, but Marvel is boiling over with 'Legacy' character cancer. Of the highest caliber. And their sales show it, too! Much to my delight, of course. My favorite part was when they said they wanted more African-American heroes, and then just flat-out killed my favorite one. RIP Rhodey, you always had the better armor. Hell, in terms of 'Legacy' Characters- he was the better Iron Man. But hey, at least no one's howling that I'm a bigot for not liking the new character. |

Oh, not really worth making a new thread about, but kinda relevant:
Anyone know if these guys are based on a specific toy? The other Cobra mooks that appeared in the same series were based on specific ones (Snow Serpents and Tele-Vipers); I have to figure they're not regular Vipers or Cobra Troopers, since IDW's Vipers have a completely different design. Given the mountain setting, my best guess is Ice-Vipers (they've got the goggles, helmets and facemasks) but the colours are completely wrong, so... is there something else that matches up more closely? They're not really based on an actual figure. |

They remind me of that three pack from 2013... the Cobra Invasion Trooper, Paratrooper guy...

I think they were just meant to be Cobra Troopers that were part of Khalikhan's Cobra Faction.

I don't really think that's an Alley Viper head...?
And it can't be an Invasion Trooper, the comic's from 2011. I guess it really is just a "generic Cobra guy" design. |

No it was a sales stunt, IDW sold just over 15,000 Copies that month and it has steadily decreased ever since to just under 6,000 copies a month currently. I don't think he wanted to do it and replaced him in the same issue with an exact copy. When that charcter was poorly received we got Dawn. With an explanation of Hama telling untold stories, which is out right Bullshit.

I gotta go with the Baron on this.
Iron Man? Rather than Tony Stark - female MIT Grad Thor? Female version. Captain Marvel? Muslim version. Nick Fury? Black male. How about rather than creating "alternate versions" of heroes to add diversity they actually create new characters with new abilities and personalities? That would interest me a lot more. Want a female ninja? Feature Jinx, or the Vypra twis, or create a new one. Want a muslim female superhero? Draw on something from the mythologies of the region (There's some truly interesting stuff from old Persia). Don't replace existing characters. It annoys fans who want to continue those stories, and the diversity can always be written off as "oh the X version of the character" as opposed to something truly unique. |
