"In the United States military, a warrant officer (grade W-1 to W-5) is ranked as an officer above the senior-most enlisted ranks, as well as officer cadets and officer candidates, but below the officer grade of O-1 (NATO: OF-1). Warrant officers are highly skilled, single-track specialty officers, and while the ranks are authorized by Congress, each branch of the U.S. Armed Forces selects, manages, and utilizes warrant officers in slightly different ways. For appointment to warrant officer (W-1), a warrant is approved by the Service Secretary of the respective branch of service (Secretary of the Army, or Secretary of the Navy for USMC warrant officers), while chief warrant officers (W-2 to W-5) are commissioned by the President of the United States."

He shows up to work when he wants to, drinks all the coffee, and smokes cigarettes and talks trash.
He knows his stuff enough that no one can call him out on it unless they're a Lieutenant Colonel, MAYBE a Major. Also sometimes they fly helicopters. Usually better than actual officers. Fun fact, many times Warrant Officers are referred to as "Mister". This is quite acceptable. So, a "Warrant Officer Samedi" may be referred to as "Mister Samedi" instead. |

The warrant officer program is especially useful for Army aviation units because it's a fast route for filling up aviator manpower positions (the Army always needs pilots): A highly motivated non-aviation NCO or civilian can become a fully-rated Army aviator (because aviators have to outrank enlisted personnel) in less time if they go the flight warrant officer route instead of the commissioned officer route (which will require graduation from OCS, a military academy, or ROTC). An example of a flight warrant officer in GI Joe is Wild Bill, who is described in his original file card as a prior-service enlisted cavalry scout who decided to become a flight warrant officer. Lift-Ticket is one, too, IIRC, although I think he was a civilian who went straight into WOCS (warrant officer candidate school). Don't get it confused though: Not all Army helicopter pilots are warrant officers, but many of them are (the rest are regular commissioned officers, your lieutenants and captains and majors and the like). Outside of aviation, the warrant officer is someone who has a lot of technical, career field-specific knowledge and experience (I recall reading somewhere that a typical non-aviator W-2 in the Army has between 13 to 18 years of experience in the enlisted ranks and in most career fields, one has to be at least a staff sergeant or a promotable sergeant to be eligible to become a warrant officer candidate). They have a lot of technical knowledge and practical experience in their career field but may not have the academic qualifications to become full-fledged commissioned officers (or they do but just choose not to for one reason or another) or alternatively, they may be unable to rise up any further in the enlisted ranks because of administrative/staffing bottlenecks. The warrant officer program basically gives the Army a way to retain these enlisted experts by giving them another option besides retiring, putting in a transfer to a different unit where they are more likely to be promoted, or going to OCS to become a commissioned officer. By becoming warrant officers, these experts receive a bump in pay and authority (WOs nominally outrank all enlisted personnel but are outranked by O-1s and above) whilst staying within the same field (i.e., only Special Forces sergeants can become Special Forces warrant officers, only Signals branch sergeants can become Signals branch warrant officers, etc.). Also, what Baron Samedi said Up here in Canada, though (and many other Commonwealth nations), "warrant officer" is a senior enlisted rank in the Army, roughly equivalent to the US Army's Sergeant First Class rank. The funny thing about Flint, though, is that Larry Hama (who wrote Flint's original 1985 filecard and the 1980s GI Joe comics) seems to have originally written him as a Special Forces staff sergeant who decided to become a flight warrant officer (based on his filecard) but in the comics, he's portrayed as a Special Forces warrant officer (I don't remember him piloting any helicopters in the comics, though I just might be misremembering).

As kids, my brother and I somehow confused "warrant officer" with "truant officer," as in the person who patrolled the area looking for kids who were cutting classes. So we convinced ourselves that Flint traveled the PIT to make sure the other Joes were where they were supposed to be. I was a dumb kid.

Similar, but more sensible than assuming he was a glorified attendance taker with a shotgun! Regardless of my confusion over his role, he was always one of my top 3 characters. Him, Stalker, and Spirit were my core team. And Stalker and Spirit were always very conscientious about arriving on time so Flint wouldn't need to cite them for truancy.

Flint has always been a conundrum with the whole Warrant Officer thung when he was introduced. First off he is listed as E-6, which is wrong. Not sure what Hasbro was going for there, but lets assume that was his rank right before his promotion. However if he received his Warrant through Flight Warrant Officer school, then he should be an aviator and no longer a Green Beret. I prefer my Flint as a Green Beret Warrant Officer. It suits his character. Maybe he just gamed the system. He wanted a Warrant so he could Outrank Duke and wanted to learn how to Fly, so he took care of it all at once, then immediately went to Gijoe so he was never forced to become a pilot.
