I was thinking today about how few GI Joe video games exist, especially since popular media is 80% nostalgia stuff now. It's particularly confusing since the Joe license, with its combat theme and deep bench of characters, would readily translate to a number of popular game types. Just off the top of my head I could see it as an Overwatch type FPS, or a third person game like Drake's Fortune. Hell, it would work pretty well as a phone game. Even friggin' He-Man has a phone game. Why not GI Joe?
I know that Hasbro is trying to get the younger people, the millennials and whomever, interested in the GI Joe brand and from what I hear those fidget spinning little whippersnappers love their games. A well made Joe game would get the brand out in front of a new audience in a way that a TV cartoon or a comic might not. |

First off, GI Joe DOES have a mobile title available RIGHT NOW. Been out...2 years(?)
GI Joe: Strike – Backflip Studios In addition, GI Joe vehicles are "cameo'd" in the Micro Machines mobile title, though I'm not sure if they made it over to the console versions. The big issues are these: First and foremost, GI Joe (the brand) really doesn't have a lot of "curb appeal" right now. Companies have to believe that investing in this brand will generate a return. No cartoon, active product line or upcoming film...there isn't much to believe in right now. With that, those big AAA titles are NOT cheap to produce. A solid upper-tier console release can easily cost $50-100 MILLION (i.e., nearly as much as a feature film- Transformers Bumblebee is seeing an estimated $77 million budget), and 2-3 YEARS to produce. With that turnaround, there is no guarantee of interest, not to mention the overall market competition. Frankly, I think Hasbro's current efforts in mobile efforts that tie into the product lines is a better method than trying to jump into the console space.

I'd be up for a G.I. Joe themed mod for COD or something.

I do understand that a big budget, full on, cross platform games are a pretty expensive proposition, but a medium budget title from a smaller developer could work. It's happened before where a niche property that was kind of between big media pushes gets picked up and turned into a mid budget game. I've seen it done with Futurama, and the Ninja Turtles once or twice. I know there's at least one more that I'm missing, but I can't think of it at the moment. Logic does suggest that you're right, though: The planets would have to align pretty hard for that to happen, and it's very unlikely. I guess I just really want a Joe FPS. Maybe with the same art direction as Transformers Devastation, that game looked amazing. A good Joe COD mod might be a nice consolation prize, though. Maybe throw a MASS Device level in there somewhere. |

They made a video game for ROC. Does anybody know how well it sold?

It's because Hasbro doesn't give a crap about the brand. Seriously, how hard would it be to get things right after all this time? No cartoon, no film, no new toys for retail anytime soon so a video game most likely isn't even a consideration either.

Agreed with all of the above. Military themed games sell like hotcakes and GI Joe could easily fit into a number of genres. Just off the top of my head, COD, Metal Gear and X-COM - style games would be totally viable.
But the problem - as always - boils down to money. As others have already mentioned, producing top-tier games requires a budget on par with a movie. But it would also be released into a market that is already pretty saturated. The problem with making a 'Call of Duty' style Joe shooter is that it would be competing with 'Call of Duty.' In the same way that movies are dominated by sequels, game producers tend to be only interested in long-running franchises. And trying to time it to coincide with the release of a TV show or movie is also problematic. Tie-in video games are notoriously terrible, mostly because they require a longer development time and budget than a movie timetable permits, and the best game developers are working on their own properties. But it's not like it hasn't happened before. Transformers has had a number of good games, even before the movies hit. Another good example might be the 'Ghostbusters' game from a few years back. It moved between a number of publishers, and at one point I even heard it was canned specifically because it was not a long-running franchise like the ones producers love so much. But at the time, there was no 'Ghostbusters' movie or TV show to sustain interest. It just appeared on it's own, running on nothing but nostalgia, and it was very successful. I don't know of any reason GI Joe could not do the same thing, if they were willing to take a chance. |

The Joe franchise is not that popular to have a video game.
