I am watching Rise of Cobra and I cannot get over how bad casting ans story line killed such a great opportunity for Hasbro. Channing Tatum is not Duke and Marlon Waynes is not Ripcord not because he is black but because he is a comedic actor. Please don't start me on Rex and Anna good lord that was a dumb story line. So the question I want to ask is how bad did the movie hurt the line? To me it killed all the momentum that the 25th line had at retail and made it harder for the GI Joe Resolute to gain traction.

The movie sucked... but I thought that most of the toys were pretty good. It definitely upped the ante from the 25th in terms of sculpt and accessories.... I actually rewatched that movie this morning, and as terrible as it was it forced me to remember how many toys we got in that line and that, unlike the bulk of Retaliation, most of it actually looked like it did in the movie.

The line shifting from the ARAH styled packaging to what it became is what killed it for me...
I was buying two of everything when they were doing the ARAH explosion cards, but there was no reason to keep the stuff released after the movie line on cards.

The vehicles were pretty cool as they did hit some home runs with the night raven which looked more the fire fox than the old Raven and the steel crusher was pretty cool but for me the movie killed the opportunity for Joe to move back into the fore front. |

I don't think it changed anything. Naturally if it were an exceptional movie it may have drawn more attention. I don't think there was any real in-roads made with the kids at all. The 25th figures while great, didn't create a new generation of fans. Neither did the movies. I think they need a cheesy cartoon movie. No one dies, tons of oneliners and lasers and everyone misses, then a toy tie-into the movie. Merchandise in every form in every aisle from gum to wrapping paper to fruit snacks to Joe-Cola and Purple Drink and Chocolate Donuts. Then the toys will sell.

My biggest gripe with ROC was just how boring the figures were. Nearly every single Joe figure was just some variation of blue camo and black gear. If it wasn't blue camo, then it just all black. Damn near every figure looked the same, there was nothing cool or unique about them. Cobra figures were even worse. Again, just all black figures, nothing interesting, or eye catching. And holy shit did they churn out those terrible vipers figures that had about as much pizzaz as a brown paper bag.
ROC figures really were just absolutely dismal in regards to style. Just black and blue, dark and boring. I don't know what direction Hasbro plans to take the new film, but if they go for a more modern style of GI joe (as ROC did), then the figures will suffer, as modern = dark colors and boring camo. GI Joe toys appealed to the kids (at least to me, when I was a kid) because they were bright, fun, and silly. I really hope they don't make the new line of movie toys (assuming they even get made) in the same fashion as the 'modern' ROC figures. anyways, just my opinion, I'm sure some people liked ROC figures.............and those people are dumb. I think the movie was a dud, but it tried. There will never be a movie made that is respectful to the original Hama written ARAH story. Personally, I would love an original period piece done exactly like that (with a little more gritty realism), but the dreadful ways that movies are made anymore (where profit derived from a guaranteed plot formula takes precedence over actual storytelling) will guarantee that this will never happen. ROC was not good because it had a terrible director at the helm, and yet, the overall story still kind of remained faithful to the source material while trying to make it it's own story. And it retained that kind of alternative world of future-militarianism with just-over-the-horizon tech. GI Joe was always a military sci-fi genre to me. The movie did not kickstart a rejuvenation of the line, which was the goal, I think. But the line had already been brought back from near-death before the film with the 25th anniversary line.
For die-hard Joe fans, the movie was kind of blasphemous. And yet, the toy line tie-in offered us one of the most prolific and expansive lines since the original ARAH run. And they weren't bad. There were a lot of good figures and vehicles offered. I think they did kind of oversaturate the retail shelves, and it soured box stores on the line from POC on. Which is kind of sad, because from the 25th on until the last of the 50th at TRU, I have consistently had a difficult time finding product in the stores when they were available. I don't shop other lines, so I don't know if this is a problem elsewhere. But it seems GI Joe sold no matter what. Did ROC hurt the line? I don't think so. I think retail stores and Hasbro's own indecisiveness with how to handle the line "successfully" did the most damage.
