Over time, I came to realize that I vastly prefer the O-Ring style vintage (and beyond) figures to the Modern Era figures. The original figures are just better TOYS, in my opinion. They're more fun to fiddle around with, and I love their playtime aesthetic. Nostalgia certainly plays a role, as well. The only downside for me is worrying about thumbs breaking when you place weapons into the figures' hands. Crotch-break and paint wear are also issues you have to watch for, but they're still pretty hardy toys. And it's hella easy to replace an O-ring.
The Modern figures do look amazing and have more articulation, so I'm not putting those down by any means. What I don't love is how floppy, loose and delicate they can be. They're great display pieces, for sure. Recently, I pared down my collection and had to make a decision. What I decided was to primarily focus on the O-Ring figures since I simply enjoy them more (even though I still sold a lot of them). I sold off most of my Modern Era figures, but even so, there were several I could not part with because they're little masterpieces. My O-Ring collection is more complete based on character selection, and my Modern collection is more about the figures I just really like in that form. I can live with that. |

I agree in terms of play factor. I could manipulate o-ringers one in each hand. What many modern figures lack (across all lines) is what i refer to as functional articulation, meaning joints that move easy. ME figures are built for holding poses, which is great for display, but hurts play function. Marvel Universe to me is the pinnacle of non functional articulation, and some Joes are better than others in that regard. But since i don't really play with them that much, ill take superior sculpting in the end.
But i hear you.

The 25th are the series I would have wanted to have as a kid. The vintage figures to me are inferior in every way. Though, for collectors and nostalgia, go for it. I like the 25th for the nostalgia value, to me they nailed it.

I wouldn’t say that I prefer one over the other, both have their strengths.
Vintage figures stand on their own, some modern figures don’t even stand with stands- BUT this is due to their more correct proportions. I haven’t hand any ME break thumbs or crotch pieces but I haven’t played with them in the back yard yet. The comic rage figures were more universal and most figures worked with most vehicles, when it comes to fiting ME figures in vehicles it’s a real crap shoot. Both sides can claim victories with specific characters. That 30th SE v1 Head sculp and body is amazing, the 30th Cobra Soldier, Airtight, Low Light, Life Line, Sci Fi, 50th Flint (if they got the sleeves right) Gung Ho, Destro, Ret Ultimate SS, all lovely. However when it comes to Cutter, Crankcase, Outback and Tunnel Rat vintage wins the day. The Club Outback headsculpt not with standing. And if you like Tunder it’s vintage or go home. Both have collections have value. I try to not compare them but appreciate both for what they are. I haven’t worn my leather MC since the 80s but I still love it, care for it, and cherish it. And yes, it still fits.
