I was thinking of doing a fun bracket tournament where various Joes and Cobras are pitted against one another in hand-to-hand combat. Given that many characters are experts in martial arts or are incredibly strong, who would be the top candidates for an open-division, Mixed Martial Arts tournament?
I came up with the following based on their bios and physical prowess: Snake Eyes - of course: "12 different unarmed fighting systems" Quick Kick - "black belt in Tae Kwon Do, Go Ju Ryu,...Kung-Fu, Tai-Chi Sword, Zen Sword, and Wing-Chun" Rock n Roll - "weight lifter" Roadblock - "working as a bouncer" Gung-Ho - "bare-knuckle brawler" Torpedo - "black belts in...Wu-Shu, Kenpo, and Go-Ju-Ryu" Scarlett - "first black bet at age 15...Marine Tae Kwon Do..." Back-Stop - "boxed in the Golden Gloves" Jinx - "competed in three forms of martial arts" Sgt Slaughter - former pro wrestler, duh Fridge - former pro football player Claymore - "Proficient in all forms of Martial Arts" Red Dog - "could have had a pro football career...big Samoan" Taurus - "circus acts involved breaking two-by-fours on his own face" Recoil - "professional body builder" Stretcher - "Olympic weight lifter" Big Brawler - "holds rank in several obscure martial arts" Budo - "fifth-degree black belt in Iaido...and three other martial arts" Dojo - "pupil of a ninja master" Bushido - "martial arts skills" Banzai - "premier nunchaku master...gained discipline...from...ninja master" T'JBang - "former disciple of...Storm Shadow's ninja clan" TGin-Zu - "best martial arts student...studied over 20 years...ninja master" Nunchuk - "studied mystic fighting forms" Kamakura - "pupil of...ninja master" Tiger Claw - "highest level of training as a ninja apprentice" Ashiko - "Araskikage ninja" Blind Master - "leader of the Arashikage ninja clan" Hard Master - "head of Arashikage clan" Billy Arboc - "trained in the art of Ninjutsu" Thanks to Loose, wedge1968, CapBritain, Blackrazor and Trazz for the following: Checkpoint - "beat Major Barrage on a wrestling mat" Major Barrage - "6'8" and 300 pounds...ex-collegiate Division 1 wrestler" Wet Down - "Martial Arts Instructor" Hot Seat - "heavyweight contender" Helix - "advanced martial arts training...Olympic-class gymnast" Link Talbot - "championship-winning martial arts skills" Other sizable contenders: Bazooka, Hardball, Repeater, Salvo, Heavy Duty, Switch Gears, Horror Show, Soft Master, Leatherneck, Big Ben, Big Bear, Skymate, Kwinn Any others? For Cobra I'd choose: Storm Shadow Firefly Zartan Ripper Dice Slice Slash Shadow Strike Big Boa Croc Master Road Pig Red Ninja Leader Ninja Viper Night Creeper Leader Black Dragon Leader Skullbuster Shadow Tracker Gristle - "trained his underlings in rarely-seen street fighting styles" ....need to think more about these...

Lifeline, Big Ben, Skymate and Big Bear. The latter because he's a big chunky Russian, Big Ben because the SAS have hand-to-hand training. Skymate because he's an Aussie and thinks wrestling crocs is for sissies. Lifeline because in the comics at least, he was a master of Aikido and beat Horror-Show in a fight.
Leatherneck always seemed like a bit of a bruiser. |

Whichever Joe has boxing and jujitsu experience. Boxers have strength training and train to take punishment (i.e. get hit) where most other martial arts focus on avoiding/deflecting hits and jujitsu practitioners will drop their opponent to the ground where if you don't know the correct counter moves you will be incapacitated in seconds.
From my limited Joe knowledge none of them have this combo so maybe enroll big.boa in some summer jujitsu classes |

Is there anyone who knows muay thai or ju jitsu? That would be a strong contender.

I never really portrayed her as a great hand-to-hand combatant (at least not at the level the other people who are listed have achieved). She did spend a little time working with Storm Shadow to develop a fighting style that allows her to compensate for her blind spot.
If she's allowed to bring knives into the ring, though... |

Check-Point and Barrage as wrestlers.
Shadow Tracker, Kwinn, Skullbuster seem like great Big Boss bad Guys.

Disallow Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow, and my money is on someone whose name I didn't see in the quick scan I just did.
As much as I love Scarlett and would be rooting for her, I think Helix would take the Joe bracket if Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow were disqualified. |
