I find it weird that they had more subs or other naval beds protecting it from Cobr. Cobra would have thought of that?

When I had my Flagg set up, I had several SHARCs with it. I've recently picked up a Devilfish as well, to go around my Flagg; when I get to display it again.

S.h.a.r.c.s. and Killer Whales were about it. No one wants to sell to a munitions and support fleet to kids. Collectors? Thats a whole different story. Besides that, the Flagg is GOAT playset/toy. Its only flaw in its legacy is it will never ever be re-released. Unless the club really wants to go out on a bang.

There was the G.I. JOE U.S.S. Tiger Shark nuclear submarine ("motorized toy"). It wasn't made for the 3 3/4 Joes (and never appeared in any comics), but I always considered it to be there lurking under the water just in case.
Oh, and there was also a smaller scale aircraft carrier (also a "motorized toy"): the G.I. JOE U.S.S. Saratoga (also never in the comics); which I considered as a partner / backup for the U.S.S. Flagg. Last edited by seaneley; 04-19-2017 at 09:52 PM.. |

It did have submarines, you just couldn't see them because they were underwater. Because that is what submarines do. ;-)

Realistically, they would have, we just didn't see them on-screen. Then again, the Flagg was never portrayed very realistically and Joe's Navy was always lacking.
Probably because G.I. Joe having a carrier group would make G.I. Joe a HUGE organization (rather than a "small elite force"). Heck, even the Flagg itself would have required way more than the entire "named" roster of Joes to operate (whole lotta greenshirts) if it were truly Nimitz-sized. A lot of people have come up with fanon explanations for the Flagg though. My personal favorite is that it's basically the Joes' "on call" Aircraft carrier (with a full support group) but the rest of the time operates on its' own as a "normal" carrier group. This also helps explain away the fact that until the nu-sculpt era Keel-Haul was the highest-ranking Joe officer: He's not a full-time Joe. More an "honorary" one (though you can bet Hawk values his experience and advice heavily when it comes to Naval matters). |

If we want to throw in a bit of reality into this, then the answer is this:
Submarines make very poor fleet escorts. The advantage of the submarine is the difficulty in detecting it. Like finding a needle in haystack, finding a submarine in a vast ocean is difficult. But if you force that submarine to remain within a protective screen of a carrier, that sub becomes far more vulnerable...and for what? Subs are very good at doing a few things (again, best done from concealment) but there are other craft that protect a carrier better than a submarine. Anti-submarine destroyers, aircraft and helicopters are far more efficient at taking out a suicidal submarine attempting to close with a carrier. In these scenarios, my money will be carrier: 1, submarine: 0. |
