I appreciate all the answers so far and some of the conclusions I have gotten to this point are next:
1) I am not alone, there are grown men who still play with their childhood toys. Playing habits can vary from person to person but it is a "playing" session anyways. 2) Wives can be pivotal on the playing habits. Some wives will encourage and even support their husbands playing habits but others will repress them. 3) People who purchase Joes for collecting and displaying purposes are less inclined to play with them as their collectibles could have a very high monetary value. Perhaps those who play with their Joes are people who buy them for their amusement factor and do not care about keeping them pristine. 4) Playing with Joes is an escapism therapy like any other entertainment medium people enjoy today, many people spend their time or money in video games, movies, traveling, night life, fashion, modeling, social networks, board games, role playing games, etcetera, but there are some others that spend their time and money in toys to enjoy them in the way they like (some for playing, some for displaying, some for collecting). Keep posting, I am really interested in reading your story. |

I have to say first off: I have the best wife in the world. When we bought our current home, it was much larger house than our first house. I expressed to her that if it was possible, I would love to have a room near our 'our cave' (like a man cave, but a cave for both of us) for my collections. We ended up with a very nice home with a very nice basement with a bedroom and entertainment room. Perfect. She said that I could decorate the cave any way I wanted and have the spare bedroom as long as my collections didn't start migrating upstairs. SWEET!
We do not have kids and don't plan to. She encourages me to collect and play. She sees how happy it makes me and thinks it's adorable that I still play with the Joes. I had a really shitty and abusive childhood and the Joes were my escape. She knows that they saved my life in a way and does not want to rob me of something so important. I mostly open and pose. I customize and switch things around. I will grab a vehicle and pose them in and around. In my head, I still 'play' and make stories up involving whoever I have in my hands and use the environment around me. The couch and Coffee Table become a couple of tall buildings and an alley. The kitchen counter is a sky scraper with a snipers nest. The open area under the coffee table is a parking garage where the bad guys gather. About once a month I will set up a giant scene, but like someone else said, by the time I get it set up, it's late in the day and I get involved with something else. I incorporate Joe's, Starwars, and anything else in that scale (Ot lose to it's use robots that are bigger than 1/18). Storm troopers become private security forces that are high tech. Cobra runs a cybernetic company that uses Titan fall figures (play arts and McFarlane), star wars droids, iron man drones. SHIELD works with the Joe's. Diecast 1/18 cars and trucks become collateral damage, normal cop cars, it exotic cars from bad guys to steal. |

I could post in here all day. But in short oh yeah man I play. Any time I find the time. If get some time to really focus on the post I will explain some because I get a lot from you guys experiences and descriptions. Playing toys is a big part of my life in the context of my sons but also for my own. Its wide open as well, Ive done the structured games type stuff, like just recently the older son and I laid a white blanket in the den, had the TRU submarine painted up and stickered to be for Cobra Busting through the "ice" and deploying 2 WOLFs, 2 Basilisks, a blue 25th hiss a snake trax painted in ferret colors, 5 of the black SNAKE armors from ROC line, a squad of Snow Serpents, a Squad of the arctic BATS a Squad of the new Urban BATS from 50thDestro was leading, there were lots of random Cobra support personnel who had a base camp set up from a vintage bunker and two 25th Surveillance port playsuits. Ok so maybe that sub is like a Tardis, bigger on the inside... but anyway at that point I had what you guys would call setting up a display or Diorama. So then The son and I looked through some Cobra Main Characters and made up a story of a rare element discovery at the North pole Cobra was trying to claim the land under obscure International law. Then we took two of the 30th Snow Cats and used the launchers to shoot over as many Cobra Troopers as we could. Then I let him get out a Joe attack force, and I got out a couple of the SDCC Scythes and 25th Conquests for a fight for air superiority cover. The Rolling Thunder anded up "Nuking" the Cobra base camp with one Lighting missile and the Sub with the other but Cobra won the conventional armor engagement and there were only a few random main characters surviving with no transport available so Firefly, Heavy duty, Zartan, Leatherneck, that blonde Cobra officer lady who is practically a main character at this point were using a bunch of the 50th snow jobs ( I army build that figure for Arctic force head swaps so I have a TON of all that gear they cone with)gear to try and survive when Scheich Polar bear started stalking them and HD and Leatherhead had to turn on Zartan and Firefly to keep them from killing the bear. Zartan has a fledgling psychic connection with Zandar and was reaching out to him, when Zandar used conventional communications to try and arrange a rescue, SHEILD intercepted the sig int and sent the Quinjet to rescue the Joes at least and capture the Cobras, who tried to high Jack the jet...It was getting late I was using the plot points of the toys getting taken out as the point I would put that toy away, we ended up down to just a couple of figures who I sat on a shelf of stuff I still wanted to fiddle with later and went to bed... That's not even a typical session, just what happened that one last good run we had two nights ago. Weekend is on us so we ill get something good going tonight once we settle in.

The only real time I have to play with them is with my son. I made this video a while ago of us playing with them. He'll be turning 5 in a few weeks, and I hope his interest remains. He's got a younger brother too, so I foresee years of playtime in my future.
Oh, and my wife has been very supportive so far of my collection and playtime with my son.

The minute you say things like "my spouse won't let me", you have bigger fish to fry
