I attended Gi Joe con in 2014 as a saturday admission only since it was local and I was a bit new to how everything worked with FunPub conventions. I had a great time. I attended the Springfield con in 2015 and went full throttle, got a golden ticket, bagged set and even attended the customizing class. I had a great time getting to know other collectors and hearing the different presentations. I even spent some money on the charity auction adn didn't regret a single purchase. I've subscribed to FSS so far and enjoyed most of the offerings.
Somehow, I've evolved since then. The sky patrol set had no appeal to me, plus I couldn't arrange time off work. FSS 5 looked very poorly put together in terms of the parts used and new head sculpts (where did Boss Fight go?), so I surprised myself and didn't subscribe. I guess as my collection of Acid rain, MTF and BFS figures has grown, I have less interest in paying for what FunPub offers. When the 2017 con was announced to be at Disney I was excited due to the fact that my wife's family has a disney time share, it coincided with some time off and I figured I could take my 10 yr old son and have some bonding time. However as the reveals were made, prices only climbed, and registration approached, I realized I have lost the desire to spend that amount of coin for that experience. I have no hard feelings against funpub, they have their reasons for doing things the way they do, but I am not even sure I want to renew my membership this year. I just sold my FSS1 collection and my other sets may soon follow. It may be that while GI Joe sparked my passion for super-articulated action figures when I was a child, other brands have surpassed the licensed hasbro output when it comes to 1:18 scale highly poseable action figures. I've even begun to dabble in some 1:12 scale stuff like star wars figuarts and four horsemen. I apologize for such a long-winded intro to my main question, but the question is; what is a good alternate convention to attend that has at least some focus on the 1:18 scale or even 1:12 scale figures? I've attended the local Dallas con a couple of times and there is almost nothing along those lines except some items a few vendors may have as afterthoughts. It fills a massive showroom, but mainly my kids and I go just to see the cosplayers and different collectors items. There is also an annual local Gi Joe collectors convention just down the road from where I live. While I enjoy that experience it is pretty small in terms of booths and seems a bit heavier on the 12-inch collectors side. I would appreciate any suggestions. I am able to travel to spend most of a weekend just about anywhere in the US with some advance notice. All I'd like to do is have an experience where I can mingle with other collectors, have a chance to see and purchase some new stuff, and maybe hear about the creative process behind some action figure line. While Joe con does offer those elements, the return on the couple grand you have to put up just to attend doesn't add up for me. Maybe I'm hoping for something that doesn't exist, but hopefully someone on this forum could offer a few tips? Thanks for your time in reading this. |

Run by 80s fans, if I lived on the East Coast I would go to Retrocon.
https://retrocons.com They usually have a good representation of voice actors, guests and GIJOE related things. Of course there is Coil Con and Joelanta as well.

Back in 2007/08 when joe was hot we had a sac joe con. It was very cool. Free gi joe gift bags with a free figure included. (I got 25th Zartan) Hot dogs, drinks, raffles with winning toy prizes, a bunch of gi joe sellers modern and vintage and a customs contest.
They even raffled a few unofficial customs they did exclusivly for that joe con. They became so popular that they started going for big money on ebay. It was only $15 to enter the con. They were cancled and changed to a toy convention once joe began to lose steam. They are nothing close to what they were : ( It went from about 15-20 joe sellers to about 2. My only advice is to find a local toy show but dont expect much if you are only looking for joes. You should look into finding a city closes to you that does a joe con. They are a blast. I miss those days.
